Australian Floods (2 Viewers)

Brett im only 5 mins from the Hawksbury river im pretty sure the K&C Landing craft might just make it down.

Reports this AM say sunami of water hit a town with the result of many dead and more missing. Only caught tail end so don't know name/location of town but my prayers are with them. Hang in there, Australia! -- Al

Hoping all of our friends from down under are doing ok, esp. our forum brothers, take care...Sammy

Official death toll 10 with 90 missing. These will mainly be from the Toowoomba and Lockyer Valley area which was hit by the sudden flood which was probably the images seen on any news overseas.

0630 here now and a very nice sunny day.

However TV news indicates major flooding in Brisbane city area expected. Some areas near to the river already getting flooded and police advising people to leave homes. Power has been cut off to parts of city centre for safety reasons. River expected to rise another 2 metres so city will be badly affected. Worst expected Thursday and many houses expected to be flooded to roof level. Figure for houses to be affected by flood is 19,700 (this is in Brisbane). Boats and pontoons floating down the river, some still attached to each other.

1/3 of Ipswich city (30 km to west) currently flooded and based on what reporters are saying the centre of Ipswich looks like it will have water to top of door level and many houses completely flooded.

Now reporting people being rescued from their rooves in suburb of Yeronga on south side of city.

Strange to watch it on the news when it is only 10 - 15km from where I am.

Floods also in northern New South Wales.

Regards
Brett
PS Simmo and Oz - anything in your area ?

My thoughts are with the Australian people and I hope my country helps you as you are one of our true friends.

Brett,

thanks for the news update, we are gtting it all over here on the TV and news, but as I don;t know the geography of Brisbane and surrounds, I'm a bit at a loss as to the extent and its effect.

Our thoughts go out to you, our fellow countymen, as we continue on in drought!

John

Hi Guys,
From looking at news and photos on The Australian web page it will be very bad for the city.

A reporter was interviewing an Emergency worker on Coronation Drive this morning. That road follows the river and I guess would normally be at least 3 metres above the river level. The worker said he expected the water would be over their heads at the worst point. They are talking about water to the 2nd floor level of The Regatta Hotel (or pub in English !!).

Many restaurants by the river will be completely flooded as will many offices and underground parking spaces. Hopefully the arts centre, museum (where last German WWI tank is) and art galleries will be OK as they are by the river although should be high enough to escape the water.

Regards
Brett

Yesterday was the first I had heard about it.Bigger area than Texas and New Mexico combined.I heard them talk abour the crocs and snakes.I hope they got everybody out ok.
Mark

Geographically speaking the Australian continent is bigger than the continental United States (excluding Alaska that is, and Hawaii of course).

The continental U.S. is divided into 48 states whereas Australia is only divided into 7 states and territories.

Ranking them in square miles will give you an indication:

1st: Western Australia - 976,786
2nd: Queensland - 668,204
3rd: Alaska - 571,951
4th: Northern Territory - 520,899
5th: South Australia - 379,723
6th: New South Wales - 309,128
7th: Texas - 261,678
8th: California - 155,959

I am high and dry with beautiful mountain views which I saw about Four weeks ago before the rains came. I lived through the big 74 floods here in Brisbane and they say this one will be bigger. That one was caused by usual summer rains with a Cyclone hitting the Queensland coast at the same time. No Cyclone yet but there maybe one in the pipeline off the coast starting to form. Let's hope that doesn't happen or we will really be in the ****. Bracken ridge were I live had floods cut some major roads but they all have receded now. The worst is to come tonight and tomorrow and Brisbane city will be under water with thousands of people flooded. The good thing is that emergency services are working overtime and the true Queensland spirit has kicked in and everyone is helping out. OZ digger is up the coast north of me and at the bottom of a mountain so I hope he is alright. I have sent him a message to see how is going. Wish us luck. Simmo.

Watching live footage from a helicopter over the city.

Changed dramatically in a few hours.

Art centre area of southbank flooded and streets around Convention centre and Museums flooded. River is about to go into the South Bank swimming pool.

Suncorp Stadium flooded with water at chest height. Many city streets flooded.

One of the problems is water coming up from the drains as too flooded.

Major problem with boats and debris floating down the river and hitting bridges and is going to be a mess at river mouth.

Peak not until tomorrow morning.

Regards
Brett

Hi Simmo,

Good to hear your area OK. Strathpine looks bad.

The weird thing is that it is has been mainly a sunny day and not much rain which is unusual compared to last few weeks.

Regards
Brett

The WW2 destroyer escort Diamantina is no longer in dry dock floating nicely. But the big thing is that Suncorp stadium home of the mighty Queensland and Broncos teams is well under water. The brewery is flooding now. Is there no justice. Simmo.

The Military Workshop said:

That puts it into perspective for me. I can't imagine the Sydney Football Stadium under water.

Northern N.S.W is flooding aswell and Queensland is helping out there to as they are closer to Brisbane then Sydney. The whole country is working to do everything they can to help each other. It's good to see. Simmo.

Thanks Brett but your shop could be in a flood area and your suburb is over near big flood areas .I hope you have a high set house mate. Simmo.

Well lads I actually live on the Brisbane River at Priors Pocket in Brisbane, and have spent the last 24hrs preparing to evac. We are pretty fortunate though, our house, whilst only 50m from the river, is sitting pretty well. The river breached its banks at our place about 1800h yesterday. The volume of water that can be viewed from our living room is something to be seen. The river will peak tonight, & I am cautiously optimistic that we will be OK. That said, heaps of folk downstream wont be. The house has been "flood proofed" as best we can, and we have a bunch of important gear to shift to our shed on higher ground. It will be another long night, as my bride and I didn’t grab any sleep last night. He is hoping all will be OK … cheers, Alby

Good luck mate as that river has some power. Keep high and dry mate and safe. Simmo.

Thanks mate, much appreciated. We are in pretty fair shap at the moment, the next 12 hours will be telling though. Difficult time for alot folk though. Cheers, Alby

Alby,
Had to Google your suburb as never heard of it before. Looks like you are in a loop of the river. Lucky to be so close to it but not flooded. Good to hear you are OK.

Simmo,
Nearest suburbs to shop mentioned are Windsor and Newmarket but shop area is higher than that. Saw mention of a creek and street in Enoggera but not near shop. House is highset and quite a distance from any flood area (so far).

Don't think I would be going in the Clem7 tunnel at this time !

Perhaps now the Govt might understand actual infrastructure more important and useful than spending 43 billion on fast broadband !

Regards
Brett
