Australian Light Horse (1 Viewer)

Hi Guys,

A gentle reminder to my good friend Oz… “How can the Scots Greys possibly be considered a failed “ENGLISH” cavalry charge?!?!”

As a proud Scot myself this should be considered a failed “SCOTTISH” cavalry charge…. Let our English cousins produce their own failures!

Best wishes and… Happy charging!
Andy C.

Andy...are you saying...that every disaster in Military History is not the fault of us English!.My whole belief system is crumbling:D;)

Just an observation. Why do K&C always have to make the mistake of including standard bearers in their cavalry sets? The Australian Light horse are beautiful figures but let down by this historical inaccuracy. The same thing applies to the Scots Greys at Waterloo, their guidons were left in Brussels decorating the walls of the Duchess of Richmond's ball, and the Light Brigade in the Crimea where no light cavalry had guidons, let alone a 6 foot by 6 foot 6 inch infantry Union flag. Just a niggle, I know, and in the long run I suppose it doesn't really matter, but as one who always strives for historical accuracy it does irritate.

Having spoken to Andy about such matters I would say it's more artistic license than a mistake. I think a good deal of K & C's success can be attributed to the fact that their products are visually pleasing rather than 100% accurate.

Trooper,
I can back OzDigger up on this. Andy of K&C is well aware of the Flag issue and this was discussed during his trip to Oz recently. There was also talk of a
brigade flag and maybe have two different flagbearers or one with two flags. I am not sure what the final decision is.
The current Oz blue flag did not exist in 1917 and it would have been the red ensign.
It is simple. Flagbearers look nice. If you are all for historical accuracy then don't buy it. However a lot of current re-enactors in Oz do carry the blue version of the flag which is technically incorrect. However it does look good when you see them.
Regards
Brett

You are both right, of course, and it is just me. I find myself swearing at the TV set when British troops are shown saluting bareheaded, or Colt's SAA are shown being used during the Civil War. As I said in my post, in the long run it doesn't really matter but it is an irritant.

I plan on getting this range, although I know absolutely nothing about it. One of the beauties of K & C is that Andy does know history better than most of us and in making ranges like this, as I buy them, it kindles my curiosity in learning about it.

It's not just you mate, many of us get carried away with accuracy issues.

Btw, speaking of saluting, it reminded me of this Aussie serving in a foreign (US) outfit:http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-heroes/ivan-cahill.htm

The Light Horse figures look cool and I will try and get hold of them when they come out. I must confess that I do not know much about this Charge but will spend the next few months trying to read up.

Here's some information about the charge of the 4th Light Horse Brigade at Beersheba: http://www.awm.gov.au/blog/2007/10/30/the-charge-of-the-4th-light-horse-brigade-at-beersheba/

The 4th Light Horse Brigade included the 12th Light Horse Regiment, 11th Light Horse Regiment, and the 4th Light Horse Regiment plus various supporting units: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4th_Light_Horse_Brigade

The 12th Light Horse Regiment I understand was the first into Beersheba as many from that Regiment continued the charge mounted to secure the town and wells. Many from the 4th Light Horse Regiment dismounted to take on the Turkish troops in the trenches.

I plan on collecting this range. Can anyone recommend a book about the Australian Light Horse.

The final charge in the movie The Light Horsemen is excellent.

Och, don't waste your cash on a book Damian - just buy the movie..!!
It's all true. Must be, cos it's in colour.

BTW, the British Intelligence Officer, Maj. Richard Meinertzhagen, played by Anthony Andrews in the movie was based on a real person - they even got his name correct.
Well I never did.

All kidding and joking aside. One of my favourite movies of all time.

Is that available on DVD for area two?
