Hi Guys,
The second of our new British “HEAVIES” flew into Hong Kong early this morning… The Handley – Page “HALIFAX” Mark III
Appropriately enough I am writing this to you on a Friday … Our Halifax bomber was also named after this day in the week… “FRIDAY THE 13th”.
She was a Mark III that flew with the Royal Air Force’s 158 Squadron from March 1944. When she retired in March 1945 she had flown a staggering 128 missions. After operational flying ended she was put on display with other aircraft outside Selfridge’s Department Store on Oxford Street in the heart of London.
Sadly, like the vast majority of other great aircraft she was scrapped at the end of the war. One part of her was saved… her “nose art” was cut away and is still on display at the RAF Museum at Hendon, on the outskirts of the capital.
“FRIDAY” is also remembered at the Yorkshire Air Museum in Elvington. There you can see a full-size, composite replica Halifax painted exactly as “FRIDAY THE 13th”.
K&C has made just 5 of these superb models and I am sure they will be flying off to some very happy collectors soon!
Best wishes and Happy Flying,
