Over 3 million German and axis personnel were awarded the Eastern Front Medal for service during 15 November 1941 – 15 April 1942 from its creation on 26 May 1942 until 4 September 1944. Soon it was nicknamed as the Gefrierfleischorden – "badge of the frozen flesh.
