This info is posted on the UK ROYAL MAIL website

USA
Start date: 18th November 2010
End date: Ongoing

Update 15th February 2011:

The United States Department of Homeland Security is continuing to require increased security measures for items carried on passenger airlines. As a result, some mail entering the USfrom around the world, and including the UK, that would normally be sent via passenger aircraft must now travel by other means, including ships and cargo planes.

Most items, including personal letters and cards, magazines, CDs, DVDs and lightweight packets, will be delivered in the USwithin a few days of posting. However, there are delays of about two weeks for some heavier packets. These delays are currently affecting stamped items, franked items, and items posted under contract, with the exception of Destination Sort and/or M-Bag items.

Royal Mail is very sorry for these unavoidable delays. We have implemented a number of contingency plans to ensure as much of our customers’ mail reaches the USas quickly as possible and are continuing to work to minimise disruption to our customers, whilst ensuring we comply fully with the USdirectives and regulations.

Cheers

Martyn:)

I sent several parcels to the US from Canada in the last half of November and 1st half of December and didn't notice any slowdowns in delivery. That included large packages sent by air.

From my experience it's now taking about 4 weeks from here to the US recipient.

With respect to the initial post, that statement would make no sense. How else would imports come into the country. You would be effectively shutting down commerce.

The Australian Post Office put out a notice recently regarding items being ship to the USA (only US, not other countries)

"Articles over 500g and all ECI and EPI services will be subject to an additional $9 security surcharge and may face transit delays of up to 48 hours"

http://auspost.com.au/apps/international-parcel.html
(if the link doesn't give the statement, enter details for a parcel that has a weight over 500g that is going to the USA as a destination... if you want to check for yourself, or maybe find their media releases)

When I spoke to my local postie person she said it's to pay for additional x-rays and security measures for stuff being sent to the US from oz. So, maybe not a ban... but definitely a tightening of security.

I checked the Canada Post site and even used the postage calculator and nothing came up about delays or surcharges to the US.

You need to parse the words sometimes and not just accept at face value what someone said.

This is what they said (whoever they are, never heard of them before this morning):

"The US Dept. of Homeland Security has a ban in place for all incoming parcels to the United States and this has created shipping delays for incoming products for us!"

Now, if there was a ban, how could there be shipping delays. There would be no incoming shipments at all, would there? It's a poor choice of words on their part.

Read the announcement on MMW website.

MMW prints the following text on its homepage:

"The US Dept. of Homeland Security has a ban in place for all incoming parcels to the United States and this has created shipping delays for incoming products for us!"

I offer that, based on the information our fellow Treefroggers have posted here, that MMW's announcement is inaccurate to refer to a "ban". There is not a ban, but an increase in the scrutiny applied to some packages.

As a yardstick to measure general shipping time, I ordered some kits from Berliner Zinnfiguren in the third week of January, and they were delivered in about 10 days.

Is it really an issue?

Prost!
Brad

It's not an issue but I brought it up here because I thought somebody might know about it.That maybe something happened that I hadn't heard about.

Same here. I have had this issue recently from Amazon UK, where I order many items. It is rather absurd that they can't find a way to be more efficient.
