Great day for the Mets! R.A. Dickey wins the Cy Young, only third Met pitcher to do it. He and Kershaw were the best this year and statistically very close, discounting number of victories.
Glad to see Dickey win it. He was pretty unhittable all season. -- Al

All three candidates were deserving. I'm just glad that we had a little bit of good news this year and that he doesn't get traded.

I think Miami has an opening for a pitcher or two.{eek3} -- Al

The MVP awards were made and they were pretty overwhelming in favor of SF's Buster Posey and the Tiger's Miguel Cabrera. Kind of no-brainers, considering the years each man had. Congratulations. -- Al

I can't say I agree with the AL one but do understand it. If you look at most statistical categories Trout comes out on top. Cabrera had gaudy stats and fixate on the triple clown but the award is most valuable, not best stats.

Good points, Brad. There is a good article in the Wash. Post this AM about how the AL MVP this year is a perfect example of the split in current thinking about how numbers are interpreted. It divides along the 'old' vs 'new'. Sabermetrics are new school and take many different numbers into account, particularly WAR, (wins above replacement), while the old school tends to stick to traditional numbers such as BA, Hr, Rbi's, etc. It is a very interesting argument and both sides have their merits. New school says Trout walks away with MVP, old school gives it to Cabrera, and the old school currently holds sway but is losing ground to new school year by year. I tend towards old school (what a shock:wink2:). No less a baseball authority than Frank Robinson said in regards to the MVP this year, "I don't see how an individual can play on a winning ballclub, and get his team into the postseason, and win a Triple Crown and not be the MVP of the league." I very much agree with this, Sabermetrics or not. Pure stat analysis can never be the final answer when dealing with the human factor. -- Al
