Nice to see the Nat's Gio Gonzalez finally resemble last year's 21 game winner. Beat Cinncy with 8 innings of 1-hit ball last night, 8-1. Hope this is the start of the Nat's awakening.:wink2: -- Al

That does seem more like Gio. And the Reds lost, which is always good! On another note, I was just reading an article about how the Marlins owner mandated a change in the pitching rotation for a double-header yesterday. What a moron this guy is! After hosing the fans and city of Miami with that huge expensive field, now he is messing with the day to day players and thier rotation?!?

Just witnessed a real pitching gem. The Nat's Jordan Zimmermann just 1-hit the Reds and beat them 1-0. Threw 91 pitches in a 2 hour 10 minute complete game win. He is now 4-1 with an ERA of 2.00 and 2 complete games. This is the second night in a row that the Nats have 1-hit the Reds. Zimm could be on the verge of a Cy Young type season. He has steadily improved for the last 3 years. -- Al

Sammy, O's making hash of the A's so far. Watched Chen pitch a gem to beat them 3-0 last night. It was a good night for the local teams pitching staffs. O's and Nats starters both looked aces and threw shutouts. Nothing better than watching a well-pitched ball game. -- Al

Hi Al, I didn't see the game but just read up on it, sounds like Chen brought his "A" game pardon the pun:) last nite, being that this is the longest road trip of the year I'm just glad to be getting some wins, Red Sox, Yanks aren't losing many so need to keep up the in the win column...Sammy

The fact that the Nats were able to 1-hit the Reds two nights in a row makes me think that maybe Washington is turning the corner a little bit. Offense still needs to come alive more regularly, but two wins against a very potent team is still a good start.

O's had today's game in the bag then the bullpen kept trying to give it back and finally suceeded in losing the game. Oh well, 3 of 4 in Oakland ain't a bad weekend. Same with the Nats. Blew the 4th game in Cinncy, but took the first 3. Nobody in the NL East can get any momentum going right now. Could be a season long race between them all, except Miami. Still a little surprised that Toronto and the Angels haven't got their act together, but there is still plenty of time, if they get moving soon. I see that KC has the AL Central lead, which surprises me a bit, but I am glad to see the ex-O's pitcher, Guthrie, is off to a fine 3-0 start with the Royals. It also looks like the NL Central and West are headed towards season long dogfights. -- Al

Keeping an eye on KC starter Jeremy Guthrie, I am glad he seems to have righted his career course. After years with the O's, as their most reliable starter (and my favorite player), Guthrie was traded to the Rockies before the 2012 season. His time there was a disaster (as it has been for many pitchers) as he got pounded and lost his confidence. He was traded to KC, leaving Colorado with an ugly 3-9 personel record, and had further struggles with the Royals in his first few starts. With his season record sitting at 3-12 (0-3 with KC), a light went on, his confidence returned, and Guthrie has returned to the form that made him the O's best pitcher for years. Since losing his first 3 decisions with KC, Guthrie has gone 8-0 (5-0 last season and 3-0 so far this year), a streak that encompass' 16 straight starts without a loss, tying the KC team record. I don't know how long this can last, but I am enjoying it for him, and I am sure he is enjoying it for himself. ^&cool -- Al

Hi Al,

taking 3 out of 4 in Oakland was great for the O's, a sweep would have been killer but as bad as the O's played there last year I'll take it, just winning the series is a big deal, just got to take care of business in Seattle next.

As the first month of baseball comes to a close got to say I'm a little surprised about how the Blue Jays and all of the money spent on that team is playing, I know it's early but when you get down 8-9 games in the standings this quick?? as the great band ACDC sings..."it's a long way to the top" and playing the Yanks, Red Sox, Orioles, Rays isn't going to make things easier, speaking of the Red Sox those boys in Bean town keep winning, and the beat up Yanks are right there with them, if this first month of baseball shows how the rest of the season is going to be, the AL East really, really will be a dog fight down to the last few days with a bunch of teams in the fight, good to have a dog in the hunt:) makes the Summer that much more fun...Sammy

What is futility? Staying up 15 innings, watching both teams go 2 for 32 with RISP, seeing your team grab a 3-2 lead in the top of the 15th, only to watch the Mets then give up two runs in the bottom of the 15th and lose. That is crap and good night to one and all

Hi Brad,

Sounds like a good ballgame to me but then again I understand what you say about the loss. No fun as a fan seeing your team go that long to blow it. Oh well there is always the next game...

Dave

Dave,

It was actually pretty bad: poor hitting -- actually very little hitting -- characterized by poor situational hitting and two blown saves.

As if that wasn't bad enough, the Angels blew a five run lead and lost in 18. That idiot Scosia has to go.

Brad

Bad night for the O's and Nats as they both lost. Real concern is that the Nats have'nt figured out how to beat Atlanta yet and that Strasburg has stiffness in his pitching arm.
Brad, I don't see how the Angels can keep stumbling along with their line-up and not do something about it. A 9-16 record is unacceptable for them and the real concern is the 7 game deficit, even as early in the season as it is. Texas and Oakland are good teams and that gap will be hard to overcome if LA allows it to get much larger. Perhaps it is time for a leadership adjustment. -- Al

Zimmermann just saved the Nat's again by salvaging the 3rd game of the series in Atlanta. He 2-hit the Braves over 8 innings, allowing 0 runs and earning the 2-0 win to go 5-1 on the season with a 1.64 ERA. Thank goodness someone is playing ball for the Nats or this season would be uglier than it is. The four other starters are a combined 6-11, hardly what has been expected of such an excellent staff. To be fair, the run support has been scarce. The 1-4 Strasburg has only gotten 1.8 runs per game and the 1-2 Detwiler has had 2 wins blown by the bullpen and has only had 2 runs of support in his 2 losses. Haren at 2-3 and Gonzalez at 2-2 have been lit up although Gonzalez has shown some of what made him a 21 game winner last year. It has been feast or famine for the Nats in a 14-14 season. They just have no rhythm so far this season. -- Al

I see that the Blue Jays are in the process of once again proving that big bucks and big names don't always return the results one hopes for. All that off-season spending has bought them the 3rd worst record in MLB, already 11 games out. Still, they do have 131 games to turn it around. -- Al

Don't know how it will end, but there is an interesting story unfolding in the O's vs Angels game. Freddy Garcia, resurrected yet again and pitching for the O's, has a no-hitter in progress after 6 innings, with a 3-0 lead. ^&cool -- Al
Update - should have kept my mouth shut. I jinxed him. Leadoff hit for LA in the 7th.

Ah, fleeting glory. Now in extra-innings.{sm2} -- Al

Man, old Jeremy threw a beauty tonight. Beat the White Sox 2-0 on a complete game, 4-hitter to make his record 4-0. I think it is his first career shutout, and thus, the best pitched game of his career. It was masterful. Worked out of trouble in the 8th and slammed the door in the 9th, using 8 pitches to finish them off. Well done, Jeremy. ^&grin^&cool -- Al

The O's finally finish up a West Coast 11 game road swing at 7-4, not to shabby, winning two out of the 3 series, and with the Sox losing today only 1 and a half games out of first place!! glad to be going home to Camden Yards and playing in front of the home folk for awhile...Sammy

Yes indeed, Sammy, a very successful road trip. Hammel has gone to 5-1. I am really impressed with how well Machado and McLouth are playing. Hardy isn't hitting for average but his Hr's and RBI's are still there. The whole line-up is dangerous and will be especially so when Reimold gets going. The O's have done a good job of carrying over the momentum from last year.
On another note, anyone got an explanation for Halliday's rough start? Is he hurt, old, or just having a really slow start? He is getting beat up almost every start. He is 2-4 after 7 starts and has only got 44 innings pitched. His K's are still there and hits allowed isn't too bad, but he is giving up runs like no one's business. He has given up 43 runs and has a 8.65 ERA. I haven't seen him pitch yet, so I can't really offer an opinion, but his numbers indicate a big problem, somewhere. -- Al
