Now that most players are signed and position players are in camp and spring training games are in full swing -- 13 games today! -- it's time to put the stove away and get onto to the business of Baseball 2016.

Mets kick off their season tomorrow against the Nationals. Should be a great race all year.

Yankees and Giants won today but Os and BoSox dropped their openers.

On paper, if you could put aside potential injuries, the Yankees could be a playoff team. They made the wildcard last year, and have improved both their greatest weakness last year (second base/middle infield) and their biggest strength (the bullpen). They scored the second most runs last year, despite their #1 and 2 hitters spending the second half of the year basically doing nothing with injuries. On paper a staff including Tanaka, Pineda Iovaldi and whose best pitcher last year was a rookie who went 11-3 with a 2.89 era sounds formidable. However, due to injuries and other question marks, the starting pitching could just as easily be a total disaster. All of the key hitters in the lineup are either old (A-Rod, Tiexiera, Beltran) or otherwise injury prone (Gardner, Ellsbury), except for McCann and Castro. Gregorius was the Yankees best hitter in the second half of the season, but is he going to be that hitter, or the .220 hitter he was in April and May? With the very fragile starting pitching and lineup, this team could either win 90 games, or lose 90 games, depending on who actually breaks down over the course of the season and when. The Yankees brass are asking fans to basically roll the dice this year, in the hope that next season, with A-Rod, Tiexiera, Beltran and C.C. Sabbathia coming off the books and freeing up $85 Million in salary, and a promising free agent class, particularly among starting pitchers, they will complete an instant rebuild. The team could get a lot younger and a lot better in 2017, so I for one will just cross my fingers and hope for a miracle health wise this season.

If anything, the Yankees have never thrown their seasons, like some teams of late. Under Girardi, they will scratch and claw to competitiveness. I agree with your assessments of this team, but Joe and the Yankees will not quit on the fans..Michael

What would be the point of throwing a baseball season; unlike basketball or football, with baseball, there is no outstanding, team changing, blue chip guy sitting there waiting to be drafted, the baseball draft is a crapshoot, who knows if any of those college kids, or worse yet, high school kids will pan out.

Makes no sense to throw anything.

If you're referring the Red Sox (like 99.999% of your posts do), they didn't throw 3 of the last 4 seasons; they flat out stunk.

There's a big difference.

Spring training off to a rousing start for the O's who are now 0-2. In the 2 games, their starting pitchers (Jimenez and Gonzalez) have gone a total of 1 2/3 innings and have given up 13 runs. Let's hope that is just rust and that things will improve as the spring goes on. O's need good years out of both these guys. Crash Davis has a Hr as he starts to earn his big bucks.:wink2: -- Al

Mets got off to a rousing start, losing to the Nats. Most of the regulars stayed back in Port St. Lucie. Montero, the SP who gave up 4 runs in the 1st, was once one of their budding prospects, but hasn't fulfilled his promise and has been injured and has been passed by the present starting pitchers. Not a great way to try to re-establish yourself.

One of the things I love about spring training is the fact that wins and losses are second to player evaluations. Sure you want to win but what matters most is that you get to figure out who will and who won't help you win when the season starts. Plus you get to see some great young talent along with a glimpse into the future of your favorite team.

Yes and no. See Starting Out Like Lions But Going Out Like Lambs.

I know it's early in spring training but I'd like to see the O's put up a win (currently 0-6) and maybe cut down on the runs allowed. :rolleyes2: -- Al

Got half my wish. O's only gave up 3 runs, but...0-7.:( -- Al

Spring training doesn't mean that much but an 0-7 start is not good.

Mets big boys played today in split squad games. Colon looked good in one game as did Matz in the other.

MLB has vacated Utley's suspension. Mets will have to take care of business on the field when they face the Dodgers.

bad habits form quickly, and I have run out of the "it's only Spring ball excuse" already :mad:...Sammy
At least Jimenez looked good today, even though he is the Oxford Dictionary definition of inconsistent. :rolleyes2: -- Al

You two fellas will be singing a different tune when the LET'S GO O'S!!! go 162-0 this year..........................:wink2:

Or not.

George, I will be realistic about the O's this year so I will settle for 150-12.:wink2: -- Al

The O's got lucky, as in extremely, when they took a flyer on Cruz two years ago, nobody wanted to touch him due to his PED issues, so they shopped in the bargain basement bin and signed him to a one year "prove your worth" deal and he basically carried that team to the ALCS vs the Royals, they caught lightning in bottle.

As they've proved since, lightning rarely strikes twice; you need to sack up and spend serious money on serious talent if you want to compete in the ultra competitive AL East.........................

The O's dropped serious money this off-season but not sure if it will pay off with the current starting pitching staff. Wish they had signed a true ace. Maybe Gallardo will do it. We'll see. -- Al

O's have now signed Pedro Alvarez, though I'm not sure why. This creates a real jam a 1st base, but Alvarez apparently will be the DH. Davis and Trumbo are 1st baseman, and now Alvarez. I guess a LH power bat is always welcome. -- Al

He's better off at DH as his fielding is poor, to be charitable.
