Baseball 2016 (3 Viewers)

I think Ballantine (which you can still get today I think) was the Yankees beer sponsor.

At least they were memorable....................you'd almost have to try to lose 21 games in a row.

The first team in MLB who's season was over by Mothers Day...................
George, the thing is, that team made losing look effortless. They made it look natural and hardly broke a sweat doing it. Marvelous! -- Al

Don't remember which yr it was, but the Os hit TWO grand slams in one game and still managed to lose! :redface2: Chris

O's win! Beat the Twins 8-1 and have now run their ST record to 1-10. The push for the pennant begins.^&grin -- Al

The Yankees aren't hitting at all. Their pitching looks fine in spring training, with the exception of Sabathia, who appears to have little or nothing left in the tank, but the hitters are making adequate pitching look good, and good pitching look great.

It looks like Bumgarner has a few minor injuries to deal with. I am hoping it is not too serious and if it is I hope that the Giants' newly constructed rotation can weather it.

Possible cause for concern in the O's starting rotation is Miguel Gonzalez. He is struggling, badly. He is 0-3 in 3 starts, not a big deal in itself, but his numbers are horrendous. He has only lasted 5.2 innings, total, in those starts and has allowed 18 hits and 14 ER's, far and away the worst numbers on the spring staff. He is an important part of the rotation, and it is still relatively early, so I hope he gets his act together. -- Al

Looking at spring training records, Nats are having a good spring, 13-4, everyone less so. Most other teams are around 500 or a little worse. Although Os are 5-12, since they started winning, their record is better, not that any of it means anything but you'd much rather have a winning record than not.

I am a little worried about the O's starting pitching at this point in ST. We have 2 weeks until Opening Day and 4 of the 5 projected starters are have bad springs. Gonzalez, Tillman, Jimenez, and Gallardo have been in a total of 11 games, have a 2-5 combined record with a combined ERA of near 12. None of them have been real effective. Their ERA's range from a high of 16.63 to a low of 7.94. It's time these 4 start showing a little better. Two weeks left to sharpen up. Let's go O's. -- Al

Spring Training is a difficult measuring stick. Last year the Bay Area was buzzing about the A's as they were tied for the best record in Spring Training, 22-11, a .667 clip. Their pitching was dominant and appeared to be the foundation for a great regular season. Then in the regular season their pitching let them down and they finished last in the AL West with a .420 winning percentage.

Agreed. I'm just a little worried that ALL of them are ineffective. Even the pitcher they are counting on as the #5 had to have a cortisone shot in his shoulder and is likely going to miss a good part of April. Just not the trend I want to see. -- Al

The general rule is that you want finish around 500 or a little better, just not too good or not too bad, just enough to show you're ready for the season.

Today is the first day I've glanced at the Spring training standings..........the AL East looks like I think things will end up, Toronto in first, Yankees and Rays battling for second, Red Sox in fourth place, the LET"S GO O'S!!.... in the cellar.

Surprised to see the Cubs and Royals looking so bad, they are a lot of peoples picks to meet in the World Series.................whatever, opening day is less than two weeks away.........

The Giants are 9-13. The pitching has been shaky but their hitting has been better than expected. Like George said, opening day is getting close and Spring Training will be a memory soon.

Al:

Little consolation but the Nats seem to be in good shape. Strasburg had a good outing yesterday, 5 innings, 0 walks and 9 K's.

Jason, I like what I see with the Nats. The starting pitching has been good with the only real question being about the new bullpen. Lot of turnover there and still questions about roles and about who is coming north. Stras looked almost mid-season form yesterday with a great fastball and that knee-buckling curve of his. -- Al

That curve is ridiculous and when he is on it is practically impossible to hit.

Opening Day for my 2 teams, the Nats and the O's, is April 4, only 10 days away. Things are looking pretty good for the Nats in terms of the starting pitching and the hitting. The bullpen is still unsettled but that seems to be more of a question of keeping 2 or 3 lefties as opposed to problems with effectiveness. On the other hand, the O's have me sweating. As expected, their hitters are killing the ball, with homers and runs galore. The starting pitching is another story. It has been a disaster and shows no sign of coming around in it's present state. Their predicted starters have a combined ERA of over 11 and no one has been effective. It is looking like a season with a lot of high scoring games, winning 12-11 or losing 14-9. Any way I look at it, no effective starting pitching equals no post-season. GM Duquette needs to make some moves with the hurlers or it's going to be a disappointing season. -- Al

It's only spring training so I wouldn't get too excited or overly upset about the performances so far.
