Re: What the Hell Is Going on with the Cubs?

"It made me wonder if perhaps he had grown up a little bit."

Him and his carpet bagger agent have 100 million reasons to grow up, as that is what he is looking for in his next contract, 4 years, 100 million.

I guess 8 years, 160 million with a club option for years 9 and 10 at 20 million a pop from the Red Sox wasn't good enough for poor old misunderstood Manny.

Cry me a river Manny.

Re: What the Hell Is Going on with the Cubs?

As a Boston fan, I always felt he acted childish but what really irritated me was finding out he pushed the 64 year old traveling secretary down onto the ground because Manny didn't get the right # of tickets for his family to see the game. This was in Florida this season.

Re: What the Hell Is Going on with the Cubs?

This game is turning out to be incredible. What an at bat by Crisp! This rivals the 10-8 game between the Cubs and the A's some 70 years ago.

Re: Boston Wins!

I've been watching baseball for almost 50 years but this has to be one of the greatest comeback (if not the greatest) I've ever seen! What an amazing game. Great at bats by Crisp and Youkilis.

Go Sox!

Re: Boston Wins!

Must've been 50 years ago when Mom and I were watching The Sox on TV . . . down seven in the bottom of the ninth aginst the old Washington Senators and they came back to win 13-12. Our foreign subscribers must think we're nuts, but that sort of things keep us going in tough times. The Rays have done a terrific job and may win the series, but this night was ours!

Yes, it's the biggest deficit overcome in LCS history, apparently.

Sure makes the series exciting, this one may go to the full 7 games.

I tuned into the Game at the top of the 7th - after watching FSU survive another game

Anyway, my wife asked "whats the score" - I said 7-0 Its over ! She then said "Well I dont know - its Boston - they do have the luck of the Irish" I chuckled in my seat going "yea - right"

Then - a hit - a lazy Tampa fielder playing it safe on the catch ... then another hit ! I could believe as I watched this all unfold

Great Game ! :D

But, now time for reality - It ends in Tampa tonight.

(at least I hope so - because I will be working in Florida for the next two weeks and it would be great to buy a ticket and see another World Series - I went to several during the early 90' with Atlanta - great fun)

Actually it's tomorrow. If the Sox win tomorrow, then it's over. I don't see the Rays recovering from that. They need to get a couple of runs off the bat and put some pressure on the Rays. I would also start Lester (he has his full complement of rest) but if you do start Beckett, he will be on a short leash. The pressure is equally on both teams, the Red Sox to survive and the Rays to see if they can get it done. If Big Papi gets hot, say see you in Spring Training Rays. It should be interesting. Many series don't get really interesting until after the first 4 games: this one is getting interesting.

I really wish i understood a word you guys are saying. If i do make it to the states i'd love to go to a Baseball game.:)

We invented it Brad, and yet have somehow forgotten how to play it!;)

Now tell me again Brad, New York Mets and Yankees, which is the most successful team and what areas do they represent?.

Rob

THAT was THE most incredible thing I have ever seen in the wide world of sports.

The Sox were dead, in the casket with dirt on them, two outs, runner on second, down 7-0, then 7-1, then 7-4, then 7-6, then tied (man did that right fielder have a rough night; he should have caught Dustins single as Ron pointed out, made the MOST BRUTAL throw I have ever seen and should have thrown Kotsay out by five miles, then was too shallow as Drew's rocket sailed over his head for the winning hit), then they won it in the bottom of the ninth.

We've got our two aces going back to back, can't ask for much more than that, it should be interesting if nothing else.......

Rob,

Baseball is divided into two diferent leagues: the National League and the American League. The champions of each league meet in the so-called World Series, which has been played since 1903. The Mets play in the National League and the Yankees in the American League. Both are from New York.

The Yankees are by far the most successful team in the history of the sport, with 26 World Series Championships to their name. The next closest team are the St. Louis Cardinals with 10 and the Boston Red Sox, with 7. The Mets, but 2:(

The Red Sox are the archrivals of the Yankees. Until 2004, the Red Sox had not won a World Series since 1918. Legend has it that when the then owner of the Red Sox sold Babe Ruth (who would change how baseball was played) to the Yankees so he could raise money for a Broadway play, a curse was put on the Red Sox, the so called curse of the Bambino (referring to Babe Ruth's nickname). The Yankees and the Red Sox, no matter how good or bad they are, are antagonists, with the Red Sox usually suffering the worst from the Yankees.

For example in 1949, the Yankees went to Boston to play a 3 game series at the end of the year. The winner would go to the World Series. The Red Sox had a two game lead and only needed to win one game; they couldn't win even one. In 1978, the Red Sox in July had a 14 game lead on the Yankees. Normally you would say the race was over. However, the Yankees caught up while the Red Sox kept losing and losing and in a one game playoff (they finished the regular season tied), the Yankees beat the Red Sox.

However, in 2004, when the Yankees were playing the Red Sox for the championship of the American League, the Yankees were up 3-0 in games and only needed one more to win and since, after all, no team had ever come back to win 4 in a row, it was pretty much of a foregone conclusion that the Yankees would win the title and go to the World Series. The improbable happened: the Red Sox proceeded to do that and went on to win the World Series. The Babe Ruth curse had been broken.

Hope that give you a little flavor for the great game this is.

Excellant Brad thats very helpful. Thanks very much for taking the time to post that for me.

He forgot to mention that Astroturf stinks, and the designated hitter rule is an abomination. ;)

Prost!

There will be Game 7!:) The Rays will rue what happened to them in Game 5. They may not have thought much about it after it happened -- or so they said -- but I'm sure they're thinking about it now.

George, as incredible as that was, the Rays going from worst to first and then being the first team to be able to finish off the Red Sox when they got them down 3-1 since the Yankees did it back in 2000 was even more incredible. I have never seen a perineal doormat like the Rays rise so fast and go so far before. Congrats Tampa Bay!! Keep it going against the Phillies!

I am so tired of hearing how great Tampa Bay is.... go Phillies!!

Hi Guys

As an American League fan all I can say is Wow I have to jump in and tell you all the National League needs to get with the program and get rid of pitchers batting! What a waste of time for the most part, yes I know that some pitchers actually can hit but for the most part its a waste of time. And dont give me the argument that it makes the managers manage better blah blah blah they have to manage more than just the pitchers batting they have to deal with all the egos in the club house and of course the press and fans. So if we are going argue that point then we must argue reraising the mound so the pitchers can really pitch.

As for the current World Series I am really glad the Rays pulled off the final win. The Red Sox can go home and shut their complaining gobs! Curse of the Bambino was just a crutch for their fans because for all those years they couldnt put together a winning season, hard to believe when you look at some of the guys that played for them during that insanely long dry spell, anyone ever heard of a guy named Ted Williams? How about a few other guys like Lefty Grove or Jimmy Foxx or Joe Cronin or Johnny Pesky or Dom DiMaggio or maybe a few more recent guys like Carl Yaztremski or Tony Concigliaro or Carlton Fisk and how about Luis Tiant. Do I need to name some more amazing players who suffered in Boston to make my point? Yes I am a Yankee fan and I cant stand the color red so I am a bit biased but I get so totally sick of hearing about how great the Sox are and how much the Yankees suck etc. Well they have had their fun and I expect they will have their fun again I just hope I dont have to suffer through them getting to the World Series again. So with that said I for one will be watching this series because two unlikely teams made it and I am really interested to see how these guys do.

All the best

Dave

Here we have the nonsensical drivel of the Yankee fan. Since they can't point to recent history, they pull out all the old warhorses of ancient history, forgetting that their team is now the third team in the division and will likely reamain so for many a year unless the Yankees can go out and buy all the free agents out there. They seem to forget that since 2000, the Red Sox have been ascendant while the Yankees on the downward spiral. I guess they would like to forget losing four straight in 2004 after being up 3-0, the only time that's been done in baseball. And since the Aaron Boone game what do they have show for it but first round play off failures?

The Sox have managed to win a championship and stay close to the top while practically turning over the team in 3 years, bringing in Youkilis, Pedroia (who may win MVP this year), Lowrie, Masterson, Lester and Ellsbury from the farm, not to mention Beckett and Lowell in trades. What do the Yankees have to show for that in that time? Jaba and that's about it. Cano flopped this year and Melky is a bust. Maybe they should bring back Bernie . It's an aging team and unless vast changes are made, they're going to be in the same situation, if not worse, than last year.

Mike Francesa, one of the hosts on WFAN, one of the top sports stations in the country (www.wfan.com) and a huge (and I mean huge Yankee fan) said it best this weekend: the Red Sox play like the Yankees used to between 1996 and 2000.

Face facts, you're going to be third as the Rays and Red Sox continue to battle it out.
