Battle of Britain (2 Viewers)

Its a great movie - no question.

I must agree & thanks to all of you I watched it again late last night when I got home whilst replaying the part about the new pilots..."from spring chicken to ****e hawk in one easy lesson." Now, have any of you watched the UK series entitled "PIECE OF CAKE" and if so, what did you think of it? I enjoyed it very much & there is a YANK in it!

Did any of you notice that my avatar/screen image is from the DAMBUSTERS? Waiting for the remake of this film is like waiting for K&C dispatches! Looks like I will have to watch the Dambusters tonight as it was the Battle of Britain late last night.

I have been impressed with this movie since I first saw it! I once had a paperback book about the maoking of "Battle Of Britain" that had all kinds of stories and trivia about the movie. Very good visuals for pre-CGI days.

The "German" aircraft came mostly from Spain. I always get a chuckle from a comment in the book; while filming the HE111s (circa 1968), one crew member commented to another "Do you realize that we have half of Spain's strategic bomber force right here?"

Another WW2 plane that was present but not seen was a modified B25 that was used as a camera plane for the aerial sequences.

They just don't make them like that anymore.

Piece of Cake was yet another classic. Adapted from the book by Derek Robinson which was also very good. I'd love to get it on DVD but I've never seen it for sale. Looks like another search on Amazon is coming up.

Cheers "H":

I bought a DVD copy of Piece of Cake a few years back from Borders-I have also seen it at Amazon in the past as well as on eBay. Good luck with the hunt!

Have found it on Amazon.co.uk, might as well order The Dambusters while I'm at it and maybe a few others.
Between Commando, War, Battle and Charleys War comics and books, DVD's and the items I've reserved from K&C UK, January/February looks like it'll be a bleak couple of months for picking up anything more in Hong Kong....Boo, Hoo....:D:eek: (Huh, that'll be the day). :):)

While you are at it, check out a film entitled "A Midnight Clear." It is a good late WW II film around the time of the Bulge & has some great actors in it.

I've enjoyed Battle of Britain several times
As I wrote on another thread for me the best film about the Battle of Britain is Angels One Five
Recently I was given a video of The Bells Go Down - the fire brigade during the The Blitz. Like a great many films from the era full of character actors rather than stars.

This is a little off the path but have any of you ever seen Foyle's War. These are murder mystery stories set in World War II England as the war is progressing, with World War II themes and it's very well done and very well acted. They've all been released on DVD.

I thought the moderators job was to keep us "on path":D;):D;):D

Normally, but that's such a great series that it has to be mentioned.

I bet you're a fan of Honeysuckle Weeks, the driver huh Brad? :D

James,

Love the name and I think she's a good actress. There's one episode with lots of Spitfires. Pretty neat.

I really like this series and have the dvds.As Brad says Honeysuckle is a lovely name and she is a good actress.I enjoy programmes set in WW2,there is just something about the Home front era that appeals somehow. Its a shame because i hear there is only one more series to come of Foyles War.

I have always enjoyed 'whodunnits' especially Period ones.
I love Poirot,Marple,Midsomer Murders and Columbo.Although Columbo is not strictly a whodunnit because you know who did it straight away!.:D

I'm not an expert on the B of B, but isn't it one of the enduring myths that the RAF was greatly outnumbered by the Luftwaffe? The forces being more or less equal and the Brits having any number of tactical advantages in fighting over their own airspace (fuel/flight time, recovery of downed pilots, radar). They certainly showed a lot of pluck but were never in any real danger of being overwhelmed - similar to the results of the U-boat war which have been greatly overestimated. Both dangers being overstated by Churchill in order to encourage the US to enter the war in 1940.

Without researching actual numbers i have feeling that the RAF were outnumbered at the start of the B.O.B.When the Luftwaffe switched to bombing London however this gave the RAF recovery time resulting in larger numbers of Spitfires attacking the Luftwaffe as they turned for home.

We must also remember that the escorting ME109'S only had approx 20-30mins over Britain before turning for home, this left many of their bombers vulnerable. However none of this takes anything away from the young men of the RAF who showed huge bravery, determination and sacrafice in defeating the worlds most powerful air force. There is as Combat says no doubt the B.O.B did a huge amount to sway US opinion.

Without doing any research, the numbers that stick in my head are approx 2000+ Luftwaffe planes (all types, bombers, fighters etc.) vs. 600 and something RAF - at the beginning of the BOB. I seem to remember that the Luftwaffe were losing planes at a 2:1 ratio for the RAF.

I'll have to check up on those figures, but that's what I remember.

If you like period whodunnits set in London and its surroundings in the late 1920's early 1930's, grab copies of Jacquiline Winspear's Masie Dobbs novels. She is a brilliant private detective/psychologist who was a WWI nurse. Ms. Winspear really colors the period well and spins an interesting little mystery. I just started the third book in the series, and already bought the fourth.

Guy's
Just spent a chunk of time with some Harrier Pilots which was great....did you know that you could fill a Harrier up for around 1800 Pounds Sterling and get around 1000 miles out of the tank?!? How cheap is that! Mind you have to buy one and maintain it but hey we could all club together!
Any way have a look at the films below, you WILL love them without question talk about low fly past!
