Re: Future and Forthcoming Warbirds

You have the greatest justification for that pride, and I would say that appreciation is shared by freedom loving people throughout the world. Whatever the tactical situation, which may, has been and will continue to be debated at great length, it was as Churchill called it, IMHO. One of my favorite movies BTW;)

Thank you Spitfrnd, you are of course right. It wasn't just about saving Britain it was about all freedom loving people in the world and making a stand for them.I also agree about the Battle of Britain film, absolutely superb and one of my faves ever since i was old enough to Shout at the screen 'SPITFIRE GET THE NAZI'!!;)

Whatever the tactical realities were one thing is clear, IMHO, Britain could have sued for peace in 1940 and probably, at least in the short term saved many of her people from horrible suffering. That she didn't is a credit to her leadership & people and they deserve our thanks and eternal gratitude for not taking the easy way out!

Its too late at night in the UK for Rob to be posting (I would think), so I'll get mine in first for once and express my appreciation for this post.
It says it all really.
Thanks

I've been reading a book called Nineteen Weeks. It's about Britain and the US between May and September 1940. In the book Churchill is quoted saying at one of the War Cabinet meetings that: "Those nations which went down fighting rose again, but those which surrendered tamely were finished." Churchill also felt as did Clement Atlee of the Labor Party, also in the War Cabinet, that "Even if we were beaten we would be no worse off than we should be if we were to abandon the struggle."

I was also reminded of the words of La Pasionaria, a leftist supporter of the Spanish Republic during the Spanish Civil War, who said "Better to die on your feet than live forever on your knees."

To accept any terms that Hitler could have offered could have meant the end of the British nation as we know it.

Dead on the last line. Thank god the British leadership recognized this and didn't fold! May 1940 was a crucial time where lesser men might have failed and the world we know today might look quite differently.
