I have become a big fan of the Tel-el-Kebir 1882 range and last year I made my own Redoubt to suit the size of the shelves in one of my display cabinets.

The base was cut from an off-cut of 6mm MDF which I had laying around, the ground work was built up using some expanded polystyrene packaging (rescued from a skip) which was cut and stuck together using a non-solvent adhesive. The rough shape was then covered in Polyfiller.

Scenic items from JG Miniatures were stuck into the still wet mixture (to keep the cost down, I cut the gabions in half lengthways as it is only the outer face that is seen).

When dry it was given a coat of PVA glue to seal and give a good base for painting. Using matt acrylic paints, the outside edges were painted in an earth colour, the rest in sand.

I did a bit of dry-brushing on the scenic items. Then the groundwork had a coat of PVA glue and a liberal covering of plastic sand granules (again from JG Miniatures).

When this was dry the surplus was shaken off and the whole base given a couple of sprayed coats of matt acrylic varnish.

Well, I had a new display cabinet earlier this year and thought I should increase the size of my display to suit, so it ended up 4 foot 6 inches by 2 foot!
Same method of construction as before, but I mixed plastic sand with plastic soil which gives a much more realistic finish. I cut the corner off the original section and made it an angle with the ditch on the attacker’s side.
I acquired a few more figures, which gives 36 plus guns and there is plenty of room for 80 or so. Just need some different British infantry and some artillery!

Hope you like.

Jeff

You have made a perfect landscape to showcase this era of battle. Catering for future releases is another asset for this piece. Well done. Robin.

Great diorama. Perhaps you could consider covering the figure bases with the sand mix, either using tacky wax or white glue. I think that might be an improvement in integrating the figures.

But it is a superb diorama nevertheless.

wonderful dio! nice composition,
fun stuff!
thanks for sharing

That looks fantastic!
And you have a great selection of figures poses which really set the scene.

Thanks Chris, might be a while as I need to find some suitable figures of British Infantry and Artillery.

Simply awesome work. As a novice at building my own landscape displays..I really enjoy seeing how these are crafted.
