Best Toy Soldier Related Acquisition of 2008 (1 Viewer)

Well it was the 9th Lancers :eek: Today we had one of 4 family Christmas parties ( too many family members in too many cities) and I unwrapped this beauty.

This is my first figure under Britains/First Gear. I have always enjoyed the photos of these, but seeing them in person is a different kettle of fish!!!!!! Ken I must thank you for truly outstanding work. If I had a Victoria Cross I would give it to you!! ;) :) :D. I just popped him in my cabinet so he can await more troops.

AWESOME

My picks are below. The figures from the French/Indian Wars and the Barzo grey stone house.

PS There's a bit of painting I did to the house: door, shutters, roof.

Hello Good People!
Ken and I were talking about the toy soldier hobby as a whole and were wondering what was your single best hobby related acquisition of 2008? It can be a figure, vehicle, building, scenic item, display case, book, event, anything hobby related. You get the idea. What one item has brought you the most joy this year?

My favourite set is this years W.Britain Christmas set (Yes, I am biased! :D)with the napoleonic era woman teasing the Guard with mistletoe. I love the clothing from that era. I love the taunting. It just makes me smile.

So guys and gals, what was your best, most joyfully spent dollar/pound etc. this year?

Happy Holidays to All!
All the Best for 2009!

Hi, Ericka, what a great idea for a thread!

Even though the year's not out yet, I think my toy soldier acquisitions are finished for 2008. After thinking about the figures, kits and books I've bought throughout the year, I'm going to say, the best acquistion I've made is not a figure, kit or book, but stumbling across this forum. Joining and participating in this forum has proved its value many times over, in the relationship to other collectors, the access to information, support and fellowship.

That's the value of the Internet, of course, making instant communication around the globe easier, and for our hobby, it's been a boon, in my opinion.

The closest thing, pre-World Wide Web, was our monthly meetings of the MFCA. While I thoroughly enjoyed the meetings (and still do), getting to speak with folks who were present and active at the beginning of the modern period (like Al Shaw, John Wirth, and others), that was once a month, and I had to drive to Philly. Forums like ours are like the leap that occurred when the telegraph was invented.

And we have such a great mix of collectors here, of all tastes, and interests in all periods of history, there is great ferment and foment here.

Yes, my best acquisition was joining Treefrog.

Prost Treefrog!

And PS-I did pick up some cool figures and kits, too, Del Prado samurai, including one packaged for the Japanese market; Little Metal Men's Oktoberfest figures, horribly painted, but decently sculpted, and no one else makes anything like them; some great Rose (Gammage) kits at our show back in April.

But the Forum makes it possible to share it with everyone.

Ericka that's a hard one for me to answer seeing that I've added some great finds to my Trophy Collection and they've all given be great pleasure. Now when it comes to my collection of matte figures by far are the 24th Foot figures I've added to it by WBritain and the attached as my most played with.......The Lt.

This Morning the answer to that question is easy. Its the John Jenkins VM-04 set that I got from under the tree yesterday. It was given to me by my family and it meant alot to me. They are supporting my interest in this, my new hobby and the figures are just beautiful.

Such a simple question, but it gets the mind to whirling. My old Grandpa mid can't even remember what I bought last spring and am even getting foggy about the stuff I bought at OTSN 2008! If I had to pick an item that really got me going in 2008 I would select the Forces of Valor 2 1/2 ton truck in 1/32 scale. This was an item that I was waiting impatiently for through 2008 (they were originally due in Feb, then August, then Sept and finally showed up in October). First, because this item is years overdue in this scale. Second, they offer many detailing and conversion opportunities. I bought two in the first run. One has been finished as a cargo truck with the seats folded up and misc. supplied stacked in the back. The front bumper winch was removed. The second is still undergoing surgery, I converted it to the "tactical cab" configuration, the tarp has been removed from the cargo bed and the side walls built. This one will be finished as an artillery prime mover for an FoV 105mm howitzer with artillery crew converted from Airfix multipose figures riding in the back.

So looking at one item in 2008 that got my blood pumping and got me inspired to take them right to the workbench and tear into them, those simple truckls are my "big deal" for 2008.

Hi,
Thanks, hope 2009 is a Happy New Year for you and that it brings these and other figures on your wish list to your door! Have you seen the FIW Indian figure? I'll be posting it soon on a small FIW album I am starting in my user CP.

Cheers,

Oh YES!!! Did you get it from the US?

Cheers,
Paulo

Hi Paulo,
Yes, it was ordered from the US.
With the current exchange rate between EUR and USD, it's now or never
Even if the custom charges may change that a bit :( (well at least in Belgium).
I bought 4 great sets from Bill Hocker this year. And I think I may well bought some more soon (hope my wife is not watching this forum:D )
Kind regards,
Michel
