We have all watched a movie with high expectations and been disappointed but there's the other side of the coin where you go to the movie or hire a dvd not expecting much but get a pleasant surprise.

I won't bother limiting the length of the list as most of you take no notice of such things anyway  :D At this stage I'll just mention one movie that stared Vin Diesel before most people knew of him. It was a low budget Sci Fi film released several years ago called Pitch Black. I prefer movies to have plenty of action and this quirky movie didn't disappoint.

Btw, don't bother taking a risk on a recent Korean movie called Dragon Wars, as you WILL BE disappointed ;)

Roger that, Digger, "Pitch Black" was a pretty good sci-fi flick, and it included Keith David, too, as the priest. I think that's a prequel to the "Chronicles of Riddick".

If I remember correctly, the blonde playing the female lead thought the story was about her character, and not Diesel's, so the producer and screenwriter changed the original draft and killed her off.

That runs here on the Sci-Fi Channel every so often, worth watching, I agree.

Prosit!

A few years back a friend and i went to the cinema but there wasn't really much on we wanted to see. We took a chance and went to see "The Usual Suspects". Wasn't expecting much as I'd seen the trailer and thought it looked a bit rubbish.
Halfway through i turned to my mate and said "This is a REALLY good film!"

I had never haerd of "Ronin" before my dad lent it to me on a rental. He said he had'nt time to view and that I could watch it before returning it. (That must have been the idea all along: Get Mikey to drive the overdue dvd back!)
Regardless, I popped that dvd in and wouldn't you know, one of my favorite films. What a sleeper! Mike

Dirty Love with Jenny McCarthney oh man that movie had me on the floor laughing.

Oz;

You're absolutely right! Awesome movie, not just high tech graphics but an interesting story with a twist.

I guess the closest I've come to Digger's premise is with the "Lord of the Rings" movies. I had read and re-read the books, from grade school to the present, and was skeptical about the film result, especially given previous attempts to film any of Tolkien's works. But I thought that Jackson did a very good job of capturing the story, without losing too much through editing. Advances in special effects technology helped, of course, and the first movie is the best of the three at presenting the story as it comes off the pages of the book, in my opinion. But it was better than I could have thought it would be.

Prost!

The latest "Rambo" movie. Good story line. The end goes over the top but all in all a good movie. Stallone isn't Charlton Heston. He doesn't get the credit he deserves, though. He has written a lot of the screenplays for his movies. "Cliffhanger" is another excellent movie of his that never received much publicity. :D

"Lars and the Real Girl." Thought it might be some sort of chick flick - but it turned out to be funny and bizarre. Also, "Shaun of the Dead". I enjoy horror movies, but usually hate comedy-horror films. This was a big exception.

I watched the Ronin for the first time this week, and I loved it. The critics panned it, and that should have tipped me off that it was a good movie.

"Ronin" is great, I especially like Jean Reno.

"Heat" is another great flick with wonderful scenes between De Niro and

Pacino.

"Wasabi" and "The Professional" are two Jean Reno classics!

I,ve got to admit it was better than I thought it would be ,
Seemed far more violent than the previous movies ,Body parts flying everywhere

Ronin and Heat! Two of the slickest movies produced for a long time, both firm favourites with me. Shaun of the Dead is another howler - loved it. Anything with Pegg and Frost works out pretty good.

Loved Shaun of the Dead but especially loved the same guys in "Hot Fuzz!" Kevin (Panda1gen) got me to watch it when he visited in March, and I almost pissed myself laughing!!:D:D:D:D

Ronin was a definite surprise and so was Pitch Black. Funny that Pitch Black would show up here as I just bought that with Chronicles of Riddick a couple of days ago for $6.98 for the two combined.
