I have bought figures and other items on EBay since 2001, and I have a question that maybe some of the more experienced Forum members can help with or provide a perspective.

Can any of you tell me why some bidders have so many (I am aware the "many" is subjective) Bid Retractions over a six-month period ?
I have seen some with 20+ Bid Retractions in six months.

Thank you

no...

I cannot tell you why someone would have 20+ bid retractions...

but I have my settings set so they cannot bid on my stuff...

I think anybody that changes their mind 20 times should be blocked from bidding...

if you have actually seen a member with so many retractions...

it only solidifies my opinion that Ebay will tolerate almost anything to appease the buyers...

Although I'm not a prolific seller, in my years of selling I've had a handful of bid retractions.

If you have someone who has 20, you should put them on your blocked bidder list. I have a couple of people on that list.

I have had a few...

once a guy said his son bought the item...

once or twice a guy said he pressed bid by mistake...

once one guy sent me an email after he won an auction...
stating that he was terminally ill...
and his wife wouldn't allow him to buy anything else on Ebay...

I cancelled the transaction and have noticed that he has bought 100's of items since...

I have never heard of a buyer with 20 bid retractions...

could you send me a PM with his Ebay name please?

The terminally ill one has to be a classic. A definite LOL. I had a buyer after the auction was over saying he bid too much, was retired, etc. I let him walk but didn't check to see if he had bid again.

yea...

I let them walk too...

I get a bad vibe after they start making excuses that they will claim damage (true or false)...
once arrived and it will be a bigger headache...

so I scratch the sale too...

Due to the number of hospitalizations occurring immediately following a successful bid (causing the bidder to go silent for a week), the CDC should look into eBay as a health risk!

I retract bids a lot. If there was only one bidder and they retract then is it really going to make much of a difference?

And in the same league; if there are 10 bidders top bid - £/$50 and the high bidder retracts their bid which results in it going back doen to say £/$49 then in the end does it really make a difference?

Scott

Scott...

yes it makes a difference...

if there is only one bidder...

and he retracts his bid...

then the seller loses the sale...

that's a very big difference...

you said you retract bids a lot...

why?

how come?

You're not supposed to be doing that Scott, unless you have one of the reasons.

What would we have if everybody didn't follow the rules and everyone did what they felt like.

The harm is you're affecting the price.

Brad

Brad...

I have never explored this...

but you have been on Ebay longer than me...

what are the reasons you mentioned?

is the seller obligated to accept a request for a retraction?

does the potential buyer get a strike?

can you expand on this?

I really don't know...but am curious now...

I don't even know how to retract a bid...

is there a tab that Ebay now provides to retract bids?

I did one years ago...

I accidentally bid on a piece I already owned...

I notified the buyer through Ebay's message center and he politely removed my bid...

I apologized and have tried to be more careful since...

Mike,

See http://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?RetractBidShow

To access it, you go to the page that lists the bids, then go to the bottom of the page, which refers to retractions.

Retracting bids has the potential for abuse because a person can enter a ridiculous bid to see the next bidder's top bid and then retract the bid. This has happened to me, which is one of the reasons I don't bid until the last five seconds.

Brad

Brad...

thank you...

interesting...

it actually favors the seller...

but of course...
Ebay wants to sell to get their commission...
so yea...
of course they want the sale to process...

Ebay policy:

Under what conditions can I retract a bid?

Whether you can retract a bid depends on the circumstances and timing of the bid. You can retract a bid for the following reasons:
You accidentally entered the wrong bid amount due to a typographical error. For example, you bid $99.50 instead of $9.95. If this happens, you need to reenter the correct bid amount right away. Changing your mind does not qualify as accidentally entering a wrong bid amount.
The item's description changed significantly after you entered your last bid. For example, the seller updated details about the item's features or condition.
You can't reach the seller by telephone or email.

Ebay policy:

What if I can't retract a bid?

If you can't retract a bid, you can contact the seller to request that your bid be canceled. The decision to cancel a bid is up to the seller.

Ebay policy:

Other terms...

You cannot retract a purchase made through a Buy It Now listing. Once you confirm your purchase, you are obligated to pay the seller.

they also appear to have a 12 hour grace period after the auction closes to attempt a retraction...

Funny this thread started as I was about to post something similer
Last night I withdrew a bid and I am 100% wrong, I admit it. But by retracking it I saved $130. Here is the reason. I have been looking for 3 years for an item on ebay, never came up. Sunday it did, starting bid $189, auction ends in 7 days. I placed the opening bid. One day later , yesterday, the same item showed up with a buy it now for $50 from another seller. What are the chances of that?
Well as many times as I,ve been screwed as a seller I said my turn. Yes there are only 3 reasons for a retraction, made mistake in bidding, cannot contact seller, and item not as listed. I clicked "mistake". My bid was taken away. Apparantly with no "bad marks" on my record. In all my years on ebay this was only my second retraction. The first one the guy improperly listed the item so I did not feel I did anything wrong on that. Again I,m wrong for what I did but I'll get over it.
I did have to call ebay to help me thru the process. Also I believe there is a time limit for retractions if it comes to close to the ending time.

From what I've seen, admittedly not that many times, most people use the mistake reason.

I would have done the same thing...

it doesn't sound like you abuse the option...

I didn't even know you could retract a bid {sm3}

I've bid impulsively a few times and just "manned up", paid for my decision-and usually was happy after I received my item.

I could see where someone's buying a duplicate by mistake or such where that feature could be handy-I'd just fear some mischief maker could cause a lot of trouble for sellers if they were so inclined

I've bid impulsively and bid too high but it never occurred to me to retract my bid. However, if I honestly made a mistake, I would use the feature.
