Father Francis "Saint" O'Connor, a Royal Army Chaplin, is blessing the pigeons of a Royal Engineers Signal Service Mobile Wagon recently arrived in France. The pigeoneer, Albert "Bertie" Noakes, in charge of the wagon and its birds, has asked for a special blessing for "Alfie" who has been selected to deliver a vital message to a command post under attack by German artillery on the Western Front.

I created this illustration for the article i wrote entitled "Winged Victory": The British Carrier Pigeon Service in the Great War for John's 2014 Collectors' Club Annual.

What is the Collectors Club Annual and how does one get a copy?

Thanks Pete. Is that through a dealer or directly from John.

Have to say, the pigeon loft is absolutely one of the neatest releases I have ever seen. The subject matter itself is so unusual it should win some kind of award for creative thinking and the execution of the model itself is just brilliant. This is JJD at it's best and the TS market at it's best, as well. John has made lots of fantastic stuff that has never been done before, but this loft ranks up there with his very best work (KotS:wink2:). ^&grin -- Al

Thinking about getting off the fence and maybe purchasing a JJD piece or two. I'm really attracted to those airplane thingies. -- Al

Think it through carefully - are planes really what you want in your collection?

I believe so. Something about the wonderful ability to fly, even if supported by canvas and wood. I like the sleek, modern look of 2 or even 3 wings. So much better than plodding around in the mud. I foresee a day when man might fly off of ships at sea! I foresee beautiful, graceful birds with yellow wings. Call me nuts but I think the future is in the air. :wink2: -- Al

Dear Icarus

I fear that you fly too close to the sun with these dreams of flight. Man is earthbound and one must remember that nemesis always makes hubris its plaything. Long before man can fly, there will be peace in the Middle East, justice around the world, and a toy soldier manufacturer will release an armoured vehicle that is universally respected for its pricing, scale, sculpting, painting and for boxing that is both artistic and functional.
