Martyn...

to pointlessly destroy someone's passion is just beyond me...
that is so senseless...

try to do something nice for the kids and your collection gets crushed...

I agree 100% Mike.

The Head Principal said nothing else had been touched in the school

All the best

Martyn...

I like to build buildings...
and dioramas...
the time spent on them is a labor of love...
even if I build them to sell...
to have someone steal all that from me...
just for the heck of it...
oooooh man!
I would be incensed...

I am really, really angry reading this...

It is senseless to destroy something that means so much to others, just for the satisfaction of destruction.

Those "animals" ... I will not call them kids … should be forced to pay for all the damage and suffering they caused to so many.
AND .. I don't mean just the money … but their time.

At the age of those club members, they will never again see what they have worked on for so long.

I do not know what British law views as an adult and what punishment they can mead out, but what was initially said is sadly true, they will probably have to say, Sorry and then just walk away.

SAD, SAD, SAD

Larry...

this whole story really make me think twice...
I have loaned JJD dioramas and figures on 1812 Chippawa and Jacobites to my cousin's children...
for class displays...
I worried about them...
but they have always come back undamaged...
I feel lucky now...

I know you do dioramas...
you know the work entailed and money invested in them...
think back how much time you spent making those wigwams...

Terrible terrible. What rotten little bastards.I can imagine the hurt felt by those who put years of work into their displays. My heart goes out to them.:mad::mad:

Evening Mike,

Yes, I have had dioramas I lent to high schools schools an have done presentations in various schools.

Three times, I have had a great time, showing my AWI collection at local museums and Historical Societies. Some times they are up for months.
I never really feared that someone would trash them ... just for the FUN OF IT ^&confuse
So senseless.

Right now I have lent a portion of my collection to a large NY museum that will be dong a Revolution War display.
This will run for three to four months. I feel very confident that they will be safe and returned to me.

I guess what really is getting me ticked off (about this article) is so many of the "KIDS" today, have ZERO care or concern for anything about themselves.
Look at the huge number of school shootings in the last few years.
Look at all the issues about bullying that are constantly in the news.
The number of serious crimes that are being committed by kids is increasing and they are getting younger and younger.

My sister in law is a Med-Tech in a nursing home.
Last year, 4 kids got allowed into the facility under the pretense they were going to visit their grandmother.
Within minutes they went on a snatch-and-grab spree, attacked another Med-Tech, stealing the drugs off her Medicart, then tried to escape.

The dumb a$$ fools didn't realize that you needed to be "BUZZED" out by the nurse or security, since it was a Alzheimer's facility and no one is allowed to simply walk out the door. They tried to smash the windows to no avail. Withing minutes the hospital security staff and police were there. You want to know the kicker .... ALL the kids were under 16!!!!{eek3}

Ya' I spend endless hours of enjoyment on our hobby, like everybody else here. I don't know what I would do if this happened to something I had set up somewhere.

Like you, I am now going to reconsider many offers ...

Really depressing news that. All that time spent by these guys who will feel robbed of their pleasure of building their displays ruined by some kids getting their kicks with just causing damage what evil little minds.

Those “youths” must have prized possessions. The owner of the destroyed property should be allowed to either sell or destroy the vandals’ favorite possessions (probably their I-phones).

now Louis...
that is a good start...

but not enough...

I know kids go off half baked sometimes...
I was a kid once...
and did some stupid things...
but you need to be severe enough in their punishment that they won't ever do anything like this again...

they should get several hundred/thousand man hours community service directly indebted to the owners of the damaged property...
whether it's washing their cars...mowing their yards...or assisting in recreating some of the lost displays...
a lesson needs to be taught...

Mike,

I'm with you completely . . . I didn't mean trashing their prized possessions should be the only punishment they receive, I just think it would be a good way to teach them to respect someone else's property as past of their punishment.

I didn't read the entire story, just glossed over it, not sure if this is a trade show where trains are being sold or whether it's just a train exhibit.

Regardless, it looks like it was held at a school/rec center.

Both of those are bad ideas.

Wherever you hold such an event, it's critical that the room be locked down 100% once the event is over for the day/night, looks like those kids somehow had access to the room.

Sorry, that's 100% on whoever promoted that event. Any show promoter worth his salt in this country belongs to a show promoter association, you can and should get show insurance in the event of a natural or in this case, man made disaster so that you and your vendors are covered.

Not sure if the promoter or the facility is liable now over this.

At the shows I attend, the room is 100% locked down, I wouldn't attend a show that did not have air tight security, too much at risk otherwise.

I wouldn't worry about your metal army guys being loaned out Larry, yours are at a museum, highly unlikely a museum is going to get trashed and if it does, the museum has insurance, so you can relax, you little metal army guys are safe, no need to "reconsider many offers" that you get, never knew loaning toy soldiers was in such high demand these days.

I don't know what smashing these kids IPhones or whatever is going to solve, how is that going to teach them to respect other peoples property, but what do I know, I don't have kids.

Curious as to how this gets resolved.

Afternoon, George,
I have ZERO concern over the safety of the figures at the NY Historical museum.
In Mike's and Richard's hands, I KNOW they are safer there than in my own home.:p

My concern is more along the line of local exhibits, like the various town's historical societies, local museums (Like the Henry Knox Museum) or model / toy soldier collector clubs and Vet halls, etc. To date, I have done 11, one, two or three day long shows, and a 3 where I left them for a month of so.
That is over the last 15 years.

I have a few requests (4-5) each year, mostly in the fall time frame, but unless it is setup in a separate and secure room and (generally) under glass ... not happin'{sm2}

The only issue I ever had was the process of getting them into and out of the show location.
Mostly paperwork items and security guards trying to hurry me up to pack up so they could leave for the day!

Admittedly, they have been small, something like 40 to 50 figures and a few diorama items.

It's too bad that this didn't happen in Singapore. Remember that American kid from years ago who vandalized some cars and was caned? The press here cried like punishing him was a crime against humanity, but I bet he doesn't do that anymore.

A fund raising page was set up to help the Club with a target of £500 ($630)............ to date over £70,000 ($89,000) has been raised with Sir Rod Stewart giving £10,000:salute:::salute:::salute::

Cheers

Martyn...

is that Rod Stewart the singer?

never mind...
I just read that article...did not know he was a model railway enthusiast...

The singer said: "It took me 23 years to build my model railway so I feel their pain.
"The collection was priceless and I am donating £10,000 to help compensate those affected and asking fellow enthusiasts Jools Holland, Roger Daltrey and others to do the same."

Yes there are, there are good people such as those who've donated and evil such as the kids responsible for this.

In the end, good triumphs over evil.

Anyone who would do such a thing is a true sociopath, no conscience, their lot end up in prison.

Or dead.

Those kids are pathetic excuses for human beings, their punishment is them being who they are and the broken toilet lives they are destined to live.

True oxygen thieves.
