Hi Jeff,

It was my pleasure to share Bob's collection with you and the rest of the Forum. You are right, there is so much to see that it is sometimes easy to overlook particular items or details. Luckily, Bob doesn't actually show me around, but let's me wander around on my own. The next time I go over to his house, I will take some new pictures. He has recently acquired and displayed a large collection of rare Pings since my last visit. I don't have any in my collection and had not even heard of them until he mentioned them a couple of years ago.

Thanks, Mike, for taking the time to take these photos and put them up, just as with Ed Ruby's collection. This is a great look at a collection that we'd otherwise not likely ever see. I know I'd pay admission just to see it.

Regarding the Lucottes, yes, Mr. Walker has a great selection from the German states, on both sides from the Napoleonic Wars. I noticed flags from Württemberg, Hessen, Brunswick, and another that reminded me of Mecklenburg's colors, as well as several Prussian regiments.

Seeing this collection, though, also inspires me. That is the kind of collection, and the kind of presentation, that I would like to achieve someday. And not just in presenting the toy soldiers, but also, presenting the books and other paper. Seeing this makes me think a little more deeply about what I'm collecting, and perhaps giving more form or direction to what I'm doing.

Hi Brad,

I am glad you were able to see both collections, even if from afar. If you ever make it out to southern California for the West Coaster or otherwise, let me know and I'll arrange for you to see one or both collections. You and Bob would have a field day going over his Imperial German reference materials and discusing his collection.

Bob's integrated collecting approach with toy soldiers, books, and militaria, all based on a theme, is inspiring. I would love to be able to do the same, but space limitations and costs prevent me from doing so. Also, it helps a great deal that Bob is not married, since my wife Jean has veto power over what I am allowed to do anyway.

Did you notice Bob's Hiriart Imperial German Totenkopf Husaren and others?

If I ever take up burglary I know where I am going. Only problem is the several trucks I will need might give me away. Plus I would need some help finding their boxes to put them in.

Brett, it was my pleasure to share Bob's collection with you and other members of the Forum. So that potential burglars won't be tempted, I did not indicate where the collection is located. Also, the boxes would not be a problem since Bob throws most of them away!

Here are two photos of Bob taken in his former garage which is more like a museum now. He gives me credit for this space, because he was going to buy a Tuff Shed and convert it into a place to display part of his collection overflow. I pointed out to him that this second garage was only being used for lawn equipment and that he should use the Tuff Shed for that and close up his garage to display more of his collection. Well, Bob never does things half way. You can get some idea of how he finished his garage in the second photo. I can't take credit for it, since my limited immagination invisaged framing-in the garage's double door opening, dry walling the interior space, painting, and then putting up shelves and display areas. He designed the area you see behind him which goes far beyond anything I immagined. In retrospect, we both agree that the only other thing he should have done was to build out this garage with a second story.

I am glad you liked them Mark. Bob is the exception to the rule, since he isn't married, he can darn well do anything he pleases.

I was at Bob's house on Saturday, 24 November 2012, to distribute the latest Hiriart toy soldier shippment. I also took a few more photos of his Imperial German/Seven Years War displays. I believe the 40mm (?) figures were made by the late Jack Scruby. If so, they are some of his finest work.

In other words, there are three issues that we collectors face (other than the wife )

1. Funding what we are looking for.
2. Being able to afford it.
3. Having the space to display it.

Any insights as to how Bob was able to solve 1. and 2. in such a great way!!!

2. It is a function of one's disposable income and how much one is willing to dedicate to toy soldiers.

3. There never seems to be enough space, but there are creative ways to squeeze out ever more display space.
