Two nights ago, I saw a one hour program on the National Geographic or Discovery channel regarding that group's latest expedition to that island. In addition to the bone fragment, they found a number of personal items that could have belonged to her. They also brought to light a number of events that strongly indicate that she crashed there: Three Pacific radio direction finding stations triangulated a distress call from that location right after she disappeared and someone found human female skeletal remains on that uninhabited island from what appears to have been a castaway just before the out break of World War II; the skeleton was sent to Australia to be examined, but has since been lost.

Interesting story, but I'm guessing the odds are very long. It would be like finding a needle in a haystack.

It would be a remarkable discovery and mystery solved but it would mean a slow and ugly death suffered by Amelia. -- Al

I watched "Amelia" with Hillary Swank and Richard Gere last week...it was a decent watch...

Amazing that Amelia may have landed on the flat coral reef which is visible and above water at low tide and made it to the island. This was in 1937 when the island was uninhabited. But in December 1938, a British Pacific Islands Survey Expedition arrived to evaluate the island as a possible location for seaplane landings or an airfield and the island was settled with with 20 Gilbertese settlers who occupied it through WW2 and later.

I think some things are better left as mysteries IMO

Per this recent update that may not be the case and as an aviation archaeologist fan I am very intrigued to see if this proves to be her kite!

"EARHART WRECK FOUND?
A report from Papua New Guinea says the wreck of an aircraft that might be the Lockheed Electra flown by Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan has been found on a reef near Bougainville Island near Papua New Guinea. The Papua New Guinea Post Courier is reporting "armed men" are guarding the area over a reef off Matsungan Island where an aircraft matching the description of Earhart's plane has been found. Divers are now checking the wreck and inquiries are flooding in from all over the world. There is no word on whether any human remains have been recovered."

Enjoy the article.

Saw an article today that stated bones discovered on the island and tested could not be identified as Earhart's. The mystery continues. -- Al
