Britains Hollowcast Set 101. Household Cav. Bandsman (2 Viewers)

Here's a few pics of my latest band - The Life Guards of the Household Cavalry (HC) - with a small contingent of Troopers along as an escort - passing by the smaller Band of the 16th Lancers, who are also accompanied by a variety of Lancers also acting as an escort - on their way to practice performing a Musical Ride - in a nearby arena.

Maybe this is where the Life Guards got the idea from???

The Household Cavalry Troopers, however, are dressed in the pre-1842 uniform ( although the band would be dressed very much the same throughout Victoria's reign)- and did not perform their first Musical Ride until 1882.

I'm currently collecting some more Britains HC in this pose - with a view to expanding the numbers of my Escorts ( from both pre-1842 and later on - as well as awaiting four more State Trumpeters dressed in State Uniforms ( also in jockey caps) - so this is not the definitive set yet!

Note the two Lancer Colonels (top right) who are watching their respective Regimental Lancer members closely - as they pass by.

Hope these pics go some way to approximating a Musical Ride. :D jb

You may recall that when I made up a lookalike old Britains Mounted Household Cavalry Band ( which began life as Set 101 - in the year 1899), I was trying to find some State Trumpeters which might "fit in".

Well - I couldn't find any.

So.............I asked my friend Andrew Stevenson from Replica Metal Models whether he could help me out, once again.

What I wanted - was a similarly posed horse from the band - carrying a State Trumpeter dressed in the old Victorian State Dress, complete with Jockey cap. To cut a long story short, Britains never made them like that - so Andrew, with great skill DID made me up four that did, as castings.

And here they are below - one being almost complete - whilst the others are also under various stages of construction/painting. I have kept them to the same size of base as my Band members - as I intend to add them as a separate rank which I can either have in - or out of my band - as I wish. jb

Wow I have mentioned something similar to these to Andrew. Only I want mine for the Durbar. There are several great photos of the Mounted State Dress trumpeters who were behind Major Maxwell while he read the Royal Proclamation they were in white overseas helmets and turbans. So those bodies with different heads will work well for me! Very cool!

Dave

I'm not as familiar with Dubar figures as you Dave - so what heads are you describing?

Incidentally - I have asked Andrew for an Indian mounted Band - using that same horse (my favourite Britains horse pose) - and he's working on it for me.

I intend for mine to become the 11th Bengal Lancers - which may also be of interest to you? jb

Just had a scoot around the net - and I can now see what you mean Dave. There were TWO forms of State Trumpeters - in that there were two Indian types in turbans - and two British types in overseas white helmets.

Silly me was looking for a guy in a helmet with a turban!!!!

And yes - if you wanted yours mounted - easy peasy - head change.

jb

I have done I the Indian state trumpeters before foremyself. The Indians have the high household cavalry boots. The British butcher boots.

Easy conversion Dave. I have the heads 😉QUOTE=johnnybach;860684]Just had a scoot around the net - and I can now see what you mean Dave. There were TWO forms of State Trumpeters - in that there were two Indian types in turbans - and two British types in overseas white helmets.

Hi guys,

In answer to Johnny you and I are talking to Andrew about the same things so it’s really scary that are even thinking of doing an Indian Army mounted Band as well. I have recently discussed Getting two bands in castings so I can make a band for Skinners Horse and one for Probyns, or Fanes Horse as well since I already have a Marlborough 11th Bengal Lancers band.
As for the mounted Trumpeters I am probably going to get 4 of each type (Indian and British) anyway these are a ways down the road right now but you need to plan plan plan right?

Aha! - I should have known - NOT quite so easy then, as the different boots means TWO castings - plus two heads.

On the plus side for Dave - is that Andrew appears to have already solved it. {sm3}

Well, I guess that I have some sort of plan running through my head at most times - although I'm also a bit impulsive - and plans can often change. However - I'm not a Durbar collector.

My four State Trumpeters are now Victorians - and just need bases finished off to complete.

I never knew that Skinner's Horse had a mounted Band Dave. Do you have any pics??? (maybe another plan hatching).:Djb

They look really good JB, should have known they were for you when I saw them on the facebook page.

Yes Scott - Special Set by Replica Model Soldiers.

Rather surprisingly, Britains never made a State Trumpeter until 1953 (QEII Coronation year). I've seen it - and I didn't like the pose on the new horse at all. I described what I really wanted to Andrew - which will add in beautifully to my existing version of Set 101 - as it uses the same old style horse, first produced in 1897 - and then the trumpeter in the almost timeless State Dress. I also wanted each trumpeter to have the trumpet up to lips - and ready to play.

I'm painting up the stands for each figure as I write this - so maybe I'll have them finished and ready for some pics tomorrow, both with, and without the Band.

Maybe then, when I show them as an extra rank in the Life-Guard Victorian mounted band, ( or just as a set in their own right), it will begin to make sense why I included them under this title. Another set that Britains never made - but maybe should have???

I just love 'em - and hope you will too. jb

Well, here's my fab four ( well I think they're fab anyway), just playing on their own at the moment. I have my big band on several different shelves - so I'll line 'em all up later on for some pic's which will include the four State Trumpeters as a rank in the band. I think that when you see them alongside the old Set 101 Band - you will se why I particularly wanted them in this pose.

Whilst playing, I have seen them towards the front of the Band - so that they can be playing the fanfare as they enter the arena - and then, they can peel off to a convenient gate and exit the arena- whilst the rest of the band plays on through their repertoire. I've also seen them at the back of the band - so I'll maybe take some pics like that too - but will have to be later - as I have chores to do right now.

So.................see you later maybe? jb

Another beautifully-finished group of figures, John!

Prost!
Brad

Cheers Brad - glad you like 'em too.

Here's the real reason that I wanted them though. I have inserted them as a separate rank into my extended "Set 101" of lookalike Britains Band of the Lifeguards in early Victorian times, ( hence the State Dress with Jockey Caps ). They will also fit in - if I were to change the Escorts to the later dress ( with Albert Style Helmets 0 - but I prefer them to display in the earlier helmet and tunic.

Note that the Drum Horse still has his two "Travellers", whilst bringing up the rear is the Life-Gaurd Escort in the pre 1942 Uniform ( the date the distinctive Romanesque helmet changed).Note also the diffeernt uniform of the Trumpeter in the second rank from left - who is in the service dress, rather than State Dress. He also wears the old Romanesque helmet - but with red plume. A very interesting and short-lived figure, first brought to my attention by my dear late friend "Trooper".

My new guys are third rank in from the left BTW.

Note also that I have taken the pic insitu - in their new home. jb
