British Guard Infantry Pre-Order (1 Viewer)

I played with toy soldiers but they were always plastic one color figures.I guess I don't connect painted metal figures the same way.

Matt there are many companies making many varieties of collectable figures of one sort or another, there is only one company making the best toy soldiers in the world, dont sell your self short. You are setting the benchmark and have drawn a line in the sand, it is for others to emulate your high standards.

1st legion "The best toy soldiers in the world"

"Historical Miiniatures for Collectors" I think is a great term to describe these little gems and is a better term if you ever decide to cover non-military subjects at some point. "Military Miniatures for Collectors" is good too. :)

Hmmmm...that does have a nice ring to it! :D

I'm not sure we're drawing a line in the sand, but I do think we're raising the bar significanty higher on what can be achieved with a reasonably priced "toy soldier" (or "historical miniatures for collectors"). Of course, I'm biased.

Yes, I have noticed your release are not very balanced. If I remember my history, wasn't Westphalia, Bavaria, and Wurttemberg (well, at least until Leipzig) all Allies of France? If you count the French Old Guard and Line Infantry as two different sets, then the poor First Legion Foot Guards are outnumbered 5 to 1!

Besides the Russians, one artillery set, and some Brit Cavalry - any more Allied support coming, such as maybe some Highlanders?

Ken

(I really like your poses, some are quite original such as NAP090).

Hey - I like the way the releases are coming out !

Now - Matt - WHERE IS MY NAPOLEON !

Hi, Ron,

I'm glad you "like" them and have found time in your busy posting schedule to drop by and say so! As for Napoleon, he (and his staff) are coming and are due around April sometime. For now, however, perhaps you might be interested in NAP0099 Kutuzov and Staff to lead the K&C Russians you must surely have tucked away over there. :D

This brings up an interesting point that my partners and I were discussing last weekend. We were talking about whether or not to label our figures as "Collector's Figures" rather than "toy soldiers" as there is more of a connotation of quality with the former than the latter.

Does anyone think at all that such a label can effect people's perception of the exact same product? Purely a philosophical question, but it's come up before in that we've had customers email us and tell us that calling our figures "toy soldiers" doesn't do them justice.

Does anyone think this really matters? Just wondering.

Matt

Hey Matt,

I know that the other "toy soldier" manufacturers are your competitors for collector's dollars, but I view your final product as at another higher level than all the manufacturers sold by TF. I own a ton of K&C and in my opinion, they are the best toy soldier manufacturer of the collector quality figure. They are the best in what they produce hands down.

I view your figures more like museum quality. Where as K&C competes with like competitors such as Britains, Conte, Collector's Showcase, etc.... First Legion is more like The St Petersburg Collection in my opinion, but you offer your figures are much better prices. Just because I said that, don't go and have a price increase! :D In fact, how about just sending your kids to a community college in their future so you can have a price reduction for your figures? ;)

I believe terms like historical or museum fit your product better than the word toy does.

Just my thoughts from someone who owns both your figures and K&C's.

Hi, Darrell,

I think I agree with this. The reason I was thinking "collector's figures" is because that's typically what figures such as St. Petersburg (or our figures custom painted in russia to a higher standard, which we do offer for anyone interested) are usually referred to as collector's figures instead of toy soldiers. In any case, we're most likely going to keep things as they are, I was just wondering what folks thought about it.

As for the implications that anyone is getting rich over here, I sure do wish that was the case, but it won't be for quite some time. In fact, I'm hoping that by the time my first child is ready to go to college in about 6 years that I'll be able to pay for it at all, community or otherwise!!! :D

No question the RUSSIAN RELEASE is fantastic ! Certainly will be coming to my collection.

Very excited about your new releases and planned to search out George in a coming Toy Soldier Show to see them up close and personal.

My next big purchase will from you will be that French Artillery Set ! - I Love It !

Thanks Ron. I figured you'd wait for K&C's Russian Staff Set like you waited for K&C's French Line Artillery that you were going on and on about last year when we released our French Line Artillery? (long memory over here).

And from your other post on the K&C Forum in regards to Collector's Showcase Napoleonics vs. K&C Napoleonics...

I haven't had a chance to see CS Napoleonic Mounted figures - so I can't make a judgement - but, those are some big shoes to fill if they are to take on K&C.

King & Country have set a very big standard for other producers to match up to IMHO.

I wonder if you think our figures are able to match up to that standard? (where's the "giggle" smiley when you need it). IMHO I'd say the standard has been reset. Of course, I'm self-admittedly heavily biased. Are you?

I hope you know that I'm just giving you a little (well deserved) teasing. :D

Well I know First Legion has exceeded it with the French infantry that I have and I expect the the Guards will be even more impressive. I know some dedicated K&C collectors that feel the same way.

Now if we could have some French and British cavalry for that comparison....;):D

I was wondering how long it would be before you brought this up again!! :D They're coming. They're like a fine wine, you can't rush them!

Well you knew it wouldn't be long; such is the price of having such a desireable product.;):D Your wine analogy reminds me of what I once told a relatively overbearing sommelier after a particularly hard day, "it can breath just fine in my stomach.":D Of course I know it takes time but that doesn't reduce our desire for them; better is better but sooner and better is best.;)

Ay, the faster you build yourself up with these Napoleonics the faster you can move to the War Between the States! In the mean time I continue to love the work you do with Napoleonics and wish you great success in 2009 and beyond.

A little thin skin ? ;) - You are starting to sound like this Scots man I know in Hong Kong ! :p

Matt - There is no question that you figures are wonderful - I have some and enjoy them a lot. I admit that I am a longtime King & Country Fan and Collector - not taking away from your work - but, K&C is simply a industry leader IMHO.

FL is making its way to the top and the figures are very detailed and museum quality for sure - I don't like to make negative remarks ( I believe my were actually neutral) on a producers thread - but, you invited the conversation.

Main problem is I find the square bases distracting and a little ugly - sorry - just not a action base pose in my opinion. Not that I won't buy the figures - they are wonderful - but when place next to K&C - thats were I come from.

I do think you have a great company and you have made a great start - I plan to buy more of your product and look forward to your future releases.

On the FRENCH ARTILLERY - I think everyone should own yours - I certainly plan to do so and buy the K&C FA set when it comes out too. I think your set is really great and look forward to owning - thanks for keeping me in mind for so long !

However, I do stand by my posts and wish you well in 2009.

Ron

I actually like the square bases as they are. I wouldn't change them at all. They look more realistic and give your figures a nice trademark! I have collected K&C Napoleonics as well as Britains in the past and they both have great product however, your figures definitely look more like museum pieces! I will definitely be looking to get some of your figures in 2009, particularly the British Guards, for a change of pace. The only other line that I am considering to continue collecting next year is Britains Zulu War matte figures. That pretty much will exhaust my self-imposed soldier budget for 2009. :(:)

Oh, I know you'll stand by your posts Ron, as misguided and overtly biased as many of them are! I wouldn't say "thin skinned", I would more say "incredulous." :D

Anyway, thank you Ron for the kind words you've said about our figures both now and in the past. We'll take your input constructively and hope that in the future we are able to attain the level of sculpting and painting quality with our Napoleonics that comes close to reaching the very high standards set by K&C. 'nuff said on this.

Merry X-Mas and now I go back to wrapping gifts for the rapidly approaching Christmas morning.

Matt

As someone who use to war game in my teens, I love the square bases on the Napoleonic era figures. I definitely wouldn't change that. I am just looking forward to January 23rd when my pre-order ships. :D

Merry Christmas everyone!

As I have noted before, the square bases are one of those wargamer features that would not have been my first choice. However, relatively the bases are rather irrelevent to me. They are a minor issue in varying the frontal poses of the figures in lines but not so much that it matters really. If you are really good with your dios, like UKReb and some other here, you won't even see them. In any event, like them or not, they are a small price to pay for the quality of the important part of the package, the figure itself.;)

Sorry if I hurt your feelings - I certainly have tried to explain that I like your figures a lot as well. Not personal here - and I really believed that I haven't been that hard of a critic to deserve such a bashing from you.

As I have said before - I do really like your figures - sorry my praise hasn't been enough for you.

Ron
