In the next few threads is the construction of a 50 year old pewter model kit of the 19th Century Phaeton carriage in 1/32nd scale from the Bygone Age series.
This is a much easier build than some of the other more complicated carriages and coaches. It went together quickly and had no fit issues but still needed a lot of molding lines
to remove, Also like many other of these very old pewter kits there was the orange residue from the amber left over when the protective coating on the metal evaporated. It comes off easily
with a brass brush.
I had a second kit that I picked up off of Ebay that the seller started but must of given up that served as spare parts if needed. Next life time I may just attempt to bring back to life with a few corrections.
excuse the cluttered workbench, but lots of crazy ideas going on

I love watching you build these classic Phoenix carriage kits, Walt!
Do you have a particular vignette in mind already for this one, or is that yet to be decided?
You've inspired me, too-I picked up the Royal Mail Coach recently off eBay, including 4 horses, the driver and a footman. I'll finish it as a coach in Berlin 1910 to go with my Kaiser's Birthday Parade collection.

Prost!

I'll be following this post too, and see how your carriage evolves.

I have asembled and painted this set about 12 years ago, so here are pictures from that one, the local collector who I did it for, was very pleased :)

Looks great I especially like the deep red color. I see you used the 2 horse set up. I will be using the 1 horse . either way, a great kit

sorry for the break in the action but "She who must be obeyed" wanted to go buy pumpkins and more mums to complete our Halloween decor. Got to love the fall in New England.

so next up was the paint. A rattle can of Krylon gloss black served as the base with hand painted details to follow. Actually went pretty quick.

Also this model had a few features added later in the century, like BRAKES. Even though in Lincolns time the brakes hadn't been added yet, I built this with the brakes installed

Side note: did you know Abe Lincoln had a white house intern that may have been a great ancestor of Monica Lewinsky. IMG_8941.jpgIMG_E8942.jpgIMG_E8943.jpg

Next up was the horsepower for this carriage. It can be powered by 1 or 2 horses. With 2 horses this can be a very fast (and dangerous) ride as this is a very light weight
carriage. I elected to go with one horse. Mainly cause I hate drilling the 4 locator holes in the horse harness/collar for the rein guides, so one element of agony better than 2.
the reins are made from fly fishing tie wire and flattened on my mini anvil. I find this wire to be very malleable and strong, so easy to position. Lesson however is to paint it AFTER
stringing it through the rein guides. I once painted them before and then because of the tight fit, all the paint peeled off when I pulled them through. DUMCOFT!

some more workbench clutter, to include 2 other white horses destined for the Bygone Age Shand Mason Fire Engine. all were hand painted in acrylics

photos below are of a young dandy in his "19th Century crotch rocket". No doubt he is heading for a disaster. Abe Lincoln would often take his wife Mary on an early evening carriage ride around Washington DC. Here they are getting ready for such a leisurely excursion
figures are by Phoenix and WM Britian. Horse by Phoenix, buildings are wooden cutouts, beautifully painted by Shiela's ProductionsIMG_E9228.jpg

Yes! He's one of my regular dealers. I watched that auction through several re-lists and always wondered if you were watching it, too!
I've got a couple of the sedan chair kits from him, too, but only started on one.

Prost!

I was watching it also, but as I have 3 already in the stash, i passed. Stable of Bygone age horses now up to 24. I need an intervention

Phaeton not going to LI. Plan is for the Sedan chair and the Shand Mason fire engine, both display only
