Hi all,
I just got promoted to cadet Ssgt. from cadet Cpl. :D^&cool!
-Sandor

P.S. Some people (let's just say those who "aren't on top of things") have begun spreading rumors about me due to this promotion, trying to get me demoted{sm2} (because I insist everyone, regardless of age, do the work). Do any of you with military experience have suggestions? Thanks:rolleyes:

Congrats Sandor and welcome to the people management world :)

Sandor mate,
Congrats on the promotion. Its always a nice feeling but extra responsibility goes with the rank.
My advice after 15 years service is: "Never ask a Trooper to do something that you were not prepared to do yourself"
Hope this helps.^&grin
Cheers Howard

Thanks for the advice! That is my philosophy, and percisely the reason people are mad at me. There is this culture where if you are a junior or above, or have been here for more than a year, then you don't have to do anything. I am training new plebes, and people also don't like that instead of learnt using just fear, I am trying to build up a trusting relationship, where they do what I say because they trust me. People have cooled down with the "bovine feces", and believe me- I am the only person with rank who still mops the floors.
What made my day is a kid who never does any work sweeping, saying it was because I was doing it too.
Thanks to both of you,
Sandor

Hi Sandor,

Congrats to you on the promo! The fact that you are doing the things and leading by example is a good thing. But make sure you dont get too carried away and end up doing all the work while the rest of the squad slide. As a leader you have to be able to do the work and demonstrate this but you have other things that you will need to attend to so when you tell them to do things like police the area they know that when you leave its because you have other duties to attend too not that you are lazy or unwilling to do the work. Since you are in school dont neglect your studies because thats a sure fire route to demotion or worse out of school because of crummy grades. I saw a lot of guys who were really squared away on the mil side of things leave Norwich because they were so caught up in that aspect that they didnt attend to the studies and had to go. As for your detractors that is a normal part of people management and you will probably see it again and again as you progress through life. Dont worry about it and keep on doing the things you are doing but remember not to be that leader that is lost in the weeds and cant see the bigger picture. Lastly do try and have fun!

Dave

Congrats Sandor. Same advice as given to my son who recentlly was promoted to Sgt in the 101st Airborne (Air Assault) Division. Continue to take care of your soldiers and all will be well. Chris
