Carnival is a national party witch mobilized the entire country. I’m from the city of Recife northeast of Brazil, where carnival is very traditional.

Interesting thing of Recife is that in the earlier 17th century the city was conquered by the Dutch who stayed for almost half century. The Dutch brought to with then Jews who weren’t welcome by the Portuguese (inquisition period in Spain and Portugal) and the Spanish. They built the fist Synagogue in the Americas. In 1654 the Dutch loose Recife to the Portuguese and fled northwards and established in the east cost of the USA and create the city of New Amsterdam that will become New York City……

Here some pictures of the Galo da Madrugada or the Cock of the early hours, a big carnival party in Recife Brazil.

It is named in the The Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest carnival parade in the world, considering the number of participants. In 2006 that number was more than 1,500,000 people.

I have learnt that the Cock of the early hours is popular down South, especially in the Brazilian area, but is less welcome as you head North. The name "Carnivale" comes from the Italian carne levare or similar, meaning "to remove meat". Although based on Catholic experiences, I think there's something there we can all relate to.

Mark, after 17 years I still wondering. My friend i am not that north, I am in Ottawa in between Toronto and Montreal. Women here are beautiful but the weather make them wear to many cloths, and the bikini is too BIG...

I took Brazilian History in College. The Professor's premise was that sex was behind most events in Brazilian History. Another Professor of Latin Amercian History had actually lived in Brazil. He would get a dreamy look on his face when talking Carnival in Rio and Bahia.

My own town of Gloucester, Massachusetts ahs a large Brazilian population. I didn't know how large until Brazil won a Soccer match and an automobile parade through town tied up traffic!
