Castings I have painted (2 Viewers)

Snap! - although I use the largest type-face that will fit - then work down. After a while - you just sorta know what will fit. Better surface for the desk top too - than metal - and if and when I need a new piece of paper I'll print a new one ( not needed yet!) - So????

Makes me smile when people say " Don't like bases" Okay - no problem with me - don't have them. I do - so I do.

Simples!! Nice talking with you Brad, watch how I get on with these. I'll be watching you too. (Sounds a bit 007!!!) johnnybach.:salute::

Good to see some activity among the painters again! We were really busy a while ago, but everyone seems to have had to take care of other things.

And for me, it's been too cold in the basement to work at my bench ;)

Prost!
Brad

I'm finishing off a WW1 British Infantry Band from Fusilier - or was - just before my parcel arrived (a tad early!). You may have spotted some pieces in the background to my new parcel pictures.

They are really nice castings - I'll post them when they're finished - and intend to buy more from "Fusilier". They're nice quality - and reasonably priced - and lovely to paint too. Actually down to you - as I learned about the company through one of your interchanges with others - just after I found the forum. jb

Something a bit different. I thought I would let you share in the exitement of the start of a new project for me - with the arrival of a parcel containing castings - fro Dorset Soldiers. This package contains some 68 figures (and one horse!) which will make up - well - I'll show you as I unpack it!

Various elements packed and labelled as to their contents. Chose to open one marked "Colour Party".

Six figures consisting: Two Ensigns with Colours, three sergeants and one W.O. The arms, weapons, pace stick etcetera are set out in front. I normally do this at this point - to check everything required is there. If not, I can e-mail for extra bits straight away. (I normally advise receipt anyway - as a matter of courtesy).

This picture shows another thing I would normally do with a big group - split it down into elements. Here you see top small box - the Colour Party. Below in the larger box is the Drum & Pipe Band. This contains 8 Pipers, Six side-drummers, 3 Cheese drum side-drummers, Bass Drummer and Drum Major - plus various arms and drums.

The above shows the major element of this group - The Military Band. This element was the main reason for the projest - as I intend making these up wearing the white doublet - which was changed to red after 1873. My whole group will be painted as Gordon Highlanders as they were in 1867. The band is 30 strong - reflecting them as they appeared in Troopers marvelous photo - which began the whole thing for me. You can find this thread at the beginning of the Uniform section of the forum - under Historical Discussion - for those who haven't seen it.

PIC_1102.jpg

This last "box" contains the Mounted Colonel, two marching Officers, one Sergeant and 9 O.R's - to represent "the Regiment", with rifled muskets with bayonets fixed at the slope. The Officers will carry drawn broadswords except the "special" sword carried by the Colonel. Again, all parts are laid out to check each piece will be correct when assembled and finished.

So, for those of you who have never seen a casting - this is what they look like when they arrive en-masse. I propose to begin with the Colour Party - and then see where it takes me. I think I will start a new thread - and post elements or other interesting "problems/decisions/solutions as I go along. Don't know yet how long it will take - but I won't rush. I like to enjoy every moment. Hope you will enjoy the ride too. If you have any questions - give me a shout. Lastly, my thanks go to the many friends who gave their time and information which allowed me to have a go at this group (You know who you are!) Thanks chaps! johnnybach

Hi Johnny,

These are going to keep you busy for a while, looking forward to seeing the progress reports.

:salute::

Wha - ha to that pilgrim. (as Big John might have said) we gotta sling a bit of lead for a while here!

As usual - when faced with a new batch - I'm floundering around and wondering "Where do I start?" I think, however, it's a bit easier this time. I have four elements - so I will kick off with the smallest - out in front - The Colour Party.

Will need to begin by sorting out what belts I need to make up - as Dorset doesn't do a kilted Colour Bearer. I obtained the flags from a Lowland casting they do - so will need to adapt from the very first one.

Will keep an eye on how you are doing with Alma though Jeff - I do like those! - jb%^V

See ya - johnnybach

I'm not, that's the trouble, there's been too much other stuff going on recently.

Sounds like my front garden - we've been feeding the little birds through the winter - and I think the word has gone around - there's hundreds of the little blighters out there every evening - flitting from bird table to the next one. Beautiful sight - but driving our dog nuts!

She thinks the garden belongs to her - so tries to see them off!

Bark! woof! etc.,

Actually Brad - winter-time is best for my painting - my tomatoes are now up - so gardening will be taking up lots of time soon - and painting goes into evening-hobby only.

C'mon Jeff - dip in the brush - slosh a bit on --- if all else fails THINK GREEN!

Looks like Christmas has come early for you jb. Those are cool looking!! Will follow along with great interest.

Hi Scott - many thanks for messages - and yes - it does look a bit like Xmas! Torn now between finishing a band - or starting on the new project. Will probably do both!

Where would be the best place to start this project - here - or new thread? It's going to take a while! johnnybach

If I may make a recommendation, you might want to create separate threads in the Painting forum for each project, say, each grouping, as an SBS/painting blog, and then perhaps create a separate thread or even a gallery for shots of the finished figures.

I did the SBS thing for a while, but if you look for mine, you'll see that it got difficult for me to keep up the pace and update the thread. I wound up just posting pics of my last couple of completed figures in threads that I had started for the collection. I also have a gallery for my Prussians, and I'll add galleries for my other collections, too. Also, for an SBS, I decided to take pictures as I go, but post them all at once, when I finish. Same goes for building models--I was spending valuable modeling time in the evenings, uploading pictures and writing captions :D

Prost!

Create a new thread and do a follow along, that way we can keep track of all the different regiments seperately.

Okay - I think I follow - but remember - this is all the same regiment - I've just split it into four parts for convenience - Gordon Highlanders c.1867.

I have chosen a date - because of all the different changes to their uniform around this time. Also Brad - what's an SBS? I haven't been around the forum long enough to know what all the TLA's are (Three Letter Abbreviations).

This is a painting/modelling project really - though more painting than anything else. How about keeping it in General Glossy as a project - and I'll just find out how it works as I fumble my way along? I will just do things as I would normally - except I'll let everyone have a look at how I do it at the same time. OK? jb

I was reading my new book which arrived from Amazon last night "The Gordon Highlanders: A Concise History" by Trevor Royle. From it I learned that the Gordons returned to the UK in 1863 from India - where they had been for several years - then remained based in Edinburgh until 1866 - when they went to Ireland. During 1865 in Edinburgh, they took part in ceremonial duties, including providing a Guard to Queen Victoria - and also went on recruiting drives all over Scotland.

In view of this, I am going to move my date (yet again) from c.1867 to 1865. My party will be going on a recruitment march - somewhere in Scotland - to practice for their forthcoming major event - providing the Honour Guard to their Queen in Edinburgh. As such, they will for the most part be in their best bib and tucker - and the mounted Colonel (Lockhart) will be overseeing every move. I will therefore be making him up - along with the Colour Party - first.

I'm thinking of calling the thread " The Gordons are Coming". How about that?:salute:: johnnybach

Ah! - Step by Step - of course! Okay - nearly finsished my WW1 Band from Fusilier - so intend to strt off soon. Last question (honest) here - or under painting?:smile2:

Good question ;) I'd put any progress pics in a thread under Painting, and the finished pieces here, or in a thread for the manufacturer, if there is one, as well as making a gallery, too.

Prost!
Brad

Johnny,

A step by step should really go into the painting section of the forum. Looking forward to seeing these. I should be licking the paint brush into a point next week, I hope.

Jeff

Thanks to all for advice - so Painting it is then. Manufacturer of the castings is Dorset Soldiers (UK). I should finish a small band from Fusilier by this weekend - just a couple of side-drums to finish off and post here - then I can really get stuck in to this new project. johnnybach
