Cherry Pickers Mounted Band (2 Viewers)

Well - all the painting of the Musician figures is now finished - although if you look closely, two of the rear rank have not been varnished yet - as the paint isn't dry enough yet to do it. The band, however, won't be getting any bigger than this - at present.

This means that I have three Escorts to paint - to join the four in the rear rank - (as well as the bases) - and then we are there!! I think some promotions amongst the Band may be in order tomorrow! But for now - I'm off to bed!!!!!:smile2:

The latest pic shows all musicians are now painted and gloss varnished. Out in front are my last three Hussars - who will eventually bring up the rear, holding carbines - just like the furthest figure on the left. Note also that I have begun painting bases (Brunswick Green), which I think complements the colours of their uniforms nicely. Last lap now for these.

Johnny,

The nice green colour really finishes them off :wink2:^&cool

Most impressive en-masse!{bravo}}{bravo}}

Jeff

Ha-ha Jeff! I was JUST waiting for Mister Green to turn up, as soon as I wrote that!!!!:D

I must admit though - that Brunswick Green IS a Fab colour - and just suits 'em. As to "en-masse" - I do agree also. I bought a book by James Opie* - around 10 years ago - when I was trying to learn a bit more about the hobby - and in it he states that Glossy TS - ALWAYS look better in large numbers. It's something to do with the eye - and what we naturally look at. Instead of looking at each individual TS - we tend to look at "A Band" - or some other grouping.

Maybe that's why I like Bands so much? Anyways up - I do like these ( I just knew I would) - and they will fit in with my other Cavalry Bands very nicely - as I will show you - once I have finished. Won't be that long now - though as usual with projects, I'm trying very hard, NOT to rush to get to the end!^&grin

*Note: James Opie (1987) "Collecting Toy Soldiers"., Collins.

Well Johnny you certainly can build and paint them like no one I know! That is an amazing band! I have totally enjoyed watching this project unfold. So tell us what do you plan to do for the coming Diamond Jubilee? I am expecting a totally awesome turn out! So are you going to do a massed musical ride for us or all of the Guards Infantry Regiments massed in the Square with bands and Colours for Her Majesty? Just some ideas for you...

Dave

Hi Dave - well - glad you've liked these lads being born-again!^&grin - but you've taken me a bit by surprise with that other idea - as I must admit that I haden't given a thought to the Diamond Jubilee at all! Actually, I much prefer the Victorian era for uniforms and spectacle. :redface2:

I do have a few Foot Guards knocking about the place of course, though all of mine are from different periods in time - so carry many different weapons, which was quite a deliberate ploy of mine from the start. I s'pose I could do a march-past of " Foot Guards Through the Ages" - as I do have HM on horse-back saluting (Though - ironically - the figure is a Britains one - as I couldn't find a casting of her to paint myself :redface2:).

Perhaps I could do a "Commonwealth Bands Through the Ages" - to back them up - as I could then muster about twenty bands or so - I suppose? (Got to get my Mounties in there - somewhere). My bands go back a fairly long way in time, you see - from the Royal Regiment (c.1760) up to the present day. Do you think that might work? I've seen that done at Military Tattoos in the past.

Mind though - you would be stretching my photographic skills (Ha! skills!!!;)) - to the limit - as I have just about learned how to point the thing, after joining the Forum! Never had a clue how to use cameras much before that! ( and not much further on now!). Thank goodness for digital - eh!

The next projects I have lined up - are a Battery of six French Cannon - and a Chess Set (Richard/Saladin) - though I thought I would give you all a rest from how I paint these - and just show them when I have finished.

Glad you like my Cherry Pickers - anyway.............jb

Hi Johnny,

Now that would be a fantastic display with all the bands and troops of the various eras marching by! I love the idea! Would have to loan you my mounted band of the 17th Bengal Lancers and maybe an elephant or camel drummer to troop through(cant forget the jewel in the crown can we!) but that would be easy enough to do!

The chess set sounds interesting. Will you be using your glossy technique or something else in mind? What era will the cannon be? Great projects that are inspiring me to pick up the brush again.

Dave

Ha! Now how about you doing a Durbar display of your own?

As for me - I only paint what I like - and that's Glossy Toy Soldiers - and as close as I can get to Old Britains "Specials" - whenever possible. As for the Chess set - that's a one-off. It's a Prince August version - done for me by a casting friend of mine. I'm painting them whenever I have a bit of spare paint on my pallette - so not very quickly. Examples below, (neither of which are finished).

The Cannon are again Prince August castings ( same source) - so are Napoleonic French c.1815. Each gun will have a crew of five - with two Officers and a Battery Commander - so will be 33 figures in all. I sloshed a bit of paint over two the other day, just to see how they will turn out - will need to do a bit of filing to remove some casting marks on these before I go any further though.

Hi Johnny,

You dont do anything in a small way do you! I do like the chess figures and look forward to the finished set. Very cool! Thanks for sharing!

As for the Durbar I have a ton of photos of my display in my photo albumns take a look sometime. Most of them are still packed away but I did break a few out recently and am looking forward to the day when I have all of my display back out. Probably be a while but its worth waiting to display it properly!

Dave

Agreed - and in a Cabinet for me - and where I can see them. I will take a peek at your pics, when I have a few minutes to spare - thanks Dave.

But - I digress - back to the Day Job!^&grin

A bit more done on "The Three Amigos" today. I hope that I will be able to put the arms/carbines on them tomorrow - and after that, it's just the final fiddly-bits to finish them off - plus the rest of the bases, and that will add another Cavalry Band to my menagerie.:D Mind you - I also have some French Caribinnearres to add to the three I did last year, up my sleeve - but they're for much later on.:wink2: See the difference in shine from the three unvarnished ones in the centre below, to the others? Marvelous stuff that Tamiya product!;)
huss47.jpg

I have cemented the arms holding a carbine on these last three figures, after touching up everything possible that will be difficult to get at now ( e.g the blue collar). I have milliput filled the two shoulder joints (left & centre) and painted them after it had set off - but left the right hand figure to show the joint. After he is also painted up - I will select the "best arm" - and he will become my Sergeant. So - brace up lads - not long until selection/promotion time. Note that I have painted the inside edge to the boots already - but will leave these outside parts until almost last - as they always seem to pick up knocks if painted too early!

Can now continue painting a few bases - whilst everything sets off.

I love it, John, the group gets more impressive, with each step that you finish and piece that you add. It reminds me of displays I seen of trooping the colors, for example, or the Sovereign's birthday. You need a long table top or shelf, with a backdrop of Buckingham Palace, or house and shop fronts, maybe, what a display it will make!

Prost!
Brad

Johnny,

A couple of points.....

Firstly, I would (as would others I'm sure) like to see the step-by-step progress of the Napoleonic Battery. please! ^&cool:wink2:

And second, carry on with the Green paint. ;);)

Jeff

Hi Brad, Jeff, glad you approve of them - so far.

I'm thinking more of Horse Guards Parade as a venue Brad - where Trooping of the Colour takes place. However, in computer-use and photography terms - I've only just emerged from a cave, so will have to practice a bit on how to get a backdrop sorted out! I'm really just a very amateur Toy Soldier (TS) painter, rather than someone like Randy (Polar Bear), for example - who just excells at producing wonderful photo's of his collection.

Well Jeff, if that's what you would like me to do with my Prince August castings of French Artillery - then that's what I'll do. Though thinking about it - what I will do, is do a step-by-step on one gun-team - and then just show the rest as I add them in, otherwise it would get rather repetative, because all six teams of five with each cannon will look just the same. As for the green, well, as I said before - I think that darker colour green just goes very well with the rest of the 11th Hussar uniform of that period. My favourite colour is red, but that just wouldn't go on a base!

Thanks for the positives and ideas though - but for now I must crack-on with the last of these Cherry Pickers............johnnybach

Just a few more little jobs to do with these three now. Painted the outside of the boots - fitted scabbard for the carbine to each horse - just a bit of yellow touch-ups and around the busby bag - and faces to give a hint of colour to as well - and I will be ready for some varnish to seal everything in. I have added in the completed figure on the left - just to show how that varnish gives them that gorgeous Glossy look, that I like so much.^&grin
huss49.jpg

Take a long look at the newly promoted Corporal and Sergeant at front far right - as this is the last time you will see them without a shine! (Note that I HAVE varnished their horses - as they were finished with painting, anyway.) Just waiting for their stripes to dry - and I will give them a coating of varnish too.^&cool

Yes - long-suffering watchers, I'm almost there with my 21 Cherry Pickers. Oh-yes, and do have a look at my right-hand Bombardon player too - he's just been promoted to a "full-screw" as well (More properly, a corporal - but that's what we used to call the little toadies!!!). Why him? - well, I like bombardons - and because as their new Commander-in-Chief - I can!:D Bases can come later - I will post another pic ASAP - and then have some sherbert to celebrate!!!{sm4}

Just finished putting the first coat of varnish on the last of the figures for this group. It looks like a bit of a road accident down there at the moment, but will be able to finish some more bases off from now on. I still need to check each piece over for errors or ommisions before I count each piece as "finished" though - but have had enough for today - so will check them out again with fresh eyes tomorrow.

Nearly there though - thanks for your patience. jb
huss51.jpg

Just finished - and it's late here, so will post these two pics of the completed project, for now, until I can (hopefully) do a better job tomorrow. But for now at least, The Cherry Pickers band and their Escort, ride again. Nite All......jb^&grin

Hi Johnny,

Very well done! I will send you my next batch of castings since you make such short work of them!{sm4}

Just kidding! You do great work and I am looking forward to the next series of photos.
