Collecting Decisions: Cameo Collections (2 Viewers)

My "cameo collections" are a bit of matt Durbar, Britains Christmas sets, matt WWI, and a Sudan. The last two are not entirely cameo collections, as I have a significant investment in both, but my definition of a cameo collection is the first thing you would sell should you want to reinvest some money in other pieces, and that is Durbar and Sudan for me, though I don't plan to sell either.

Hi Guys,

I just completed a trip around Germany and Belgium and Holland and managed to acquire some toy soldiers in the process. I found a pair of Austrian Empire figures in Rothenburg Germany and a couple of plastic Elastolin Landeskneckts that relate to Rothenburg as well. I will post some photos once I figure out what I did with the camera cable.

I also found a small shop in Salzberg that had some 30mm and 45mm flats and semi round figures but the dealer wanted too much money for them. So I was thrilled to find some but didnt buy any. I also bought what I believe are homecastings depicting the 100 years war and while they are colourful and fun I gave them my son to enjoy and I think he has added them to war zone of a room... Great fun and they were really priced to sell at 5 euro for 8 figures.

So has anyone acquired anything of note? I know one person out there who did but I wonder if he is going to share with us? He picked up a wicked cool piece of GI Joe equipment that many folks here will be envious of...

Hi Guys,

Here are the photos I promised. Attached you will find some very wonderful IMO Elastolin Plastic figures from the 100years War depicting the Burgermeister of Rothenburg ab Der Tauber saving the city from being sacked by downing a large beer in one breath. This act is actually replayed everyday in the town square by a wonderful clock tower. So if you ever get to Germany come and see the tower!

The second set of figures are Austrian Hungarian Empire. Franz Joseph and a General painted by a gentleman from Croatia who comes around once a year to sell his wears. I wasnt able to get a name but the work is well done and they really fit nicely into my display. I hope to add some more of these figures to this little display next time I get to Rothenburg.

Enjoy

Dave

Hi Again,

This summer has been a busy one! We had a baby boy in May and used my wifes leave to travel. We hit Italy, Austria, Holland, Bavaria, Hungray, and The Czech Republic. I found several stores along the way and made some very interesting pick ups. I have also had some very good luck at the local flea markets and will be posting photos of these items soon.

Anyone else make an interesting find?

Dave

Ok guys,

Here are some photos of the items I picked up this summer. Please ask questions if you have any and we can discuss where IO found them etc.

Hi Poppo,

I would say it was made in the 1930's probably just prior to the out break of WWII. But I am not an expert on this type of soldier and I have very few references. However it was a really cool looking figure and I had to bring him home. Even my wife found it interesting and she is not into this hobby at all...

Thanks for looking and commenting

Hi Dave,

I believe your wife found it interesting as women may like figures, but not deads, violence and fightings :)

Hi Guys,

I was in France and found some rather interesting figures so I decided to share them with you. I found three mounted figures that are all in need of some TLC but they are charming none the less so I had to get them and at 3 Euro a figure I couldnt possibly say no. The mounted figures are one of Napoleon, a Chassuer a Cheval and probably a Life Guard in Winter cloak. The next figures are from a Spanish Company called Almirall they are 54mm and on plastic stands. They are both Napoleonic Chasseurs. Then I saw a Drum Major who is glossy and solid cast lead and is 75mm to the tip of his hat plume. Lastly I have a pair of Elastolin figures from the 1930s of a wounded man and a Nurse. These were found in Heidelberg recently at a flea market. Hope you enjoy them.

when you find these items do you leave them in the condition you find them (growing old with grace) or do you repaint them?

I ask because I have acquired over the years many old figures of the berlin/ german era and, can't bring myself to do any work on them. just wondered how others address this issue
Mitch

Hi Mitch,

I like this question, because its one that I have been thinking about for a while as well. I generally dont do any repainting on my finds because I like the played with look on the older figures. I am willing to do some painting on newer figures that are damaged but that doesnt happen too often. About the only repairs I will make to the old composition soldiers is to re-glue a loose head or other small part, mainly to keep them from getting more destroyed when we move again.

Thanks for asking and for looking at the finds.

Dave..

Thanks for the reply. I should have said how nice the finds are in my last post but, got caught up in the question. Its strange I don't really like any chips etc on newer figures but, as I said these I don't mind. Adds some charm to them when they look like they have been well played with. Don't seem to find as many these days but, its nice when some old sets come to light that I can get for my collection
Cheers
Mitch

the facial detail on the cav trooper in the second picture to the left has stood the test of time!!!

Hi Chris,

I agree! I am not sure when he was made but he is certainly heavy so I believe he is mainly lead. I hope to find a maker for him and the others soon. So anyone who might have an idea please let me know so we can discuss it.

Dave

Hi Guys,

Just thought you all might like to see some of what I found at the London Show. They are all glossy and the single figures only cost a 6 each the mounted guy was a little more at 15 and the Edwardian Family was 18. So I am here to say there are still great deals to be had out there. Enjoy!
