It's almost that time again. For once there is a positive story about a player to start the season. And this from my own school:

USC cornerback Josh Shaw will be sidelined indefinitely after a heroic act left the fifth-year senior with a pair of high ankle sprains.

Just hours after being voted a team captain on Saturday, Shaw was attending a family function when he saw his 7-year-old nephew, who does not know how to swim, struggling in a nearby pool. Instinctively, Shaw jumped from a second-floor balcony onto concrete below and crawled into the pool where he was able to help his nephew to safety, according to a release from the school.

After getting his nephew to safety, Shaw made his way to a ladder and pulled himself from the water.

"I would do it again for whatever kid it was, it did not have to be my nephew," Shaw said. "My ankles really hurt, but I am lucky to be surrounded by the best trainers and doctors in the world. I am taking my rehab one day at a time, and I hope to be back on the field as soon as possible."

Many of the usual cupcake games in week one, but also a couple of good ones. Here are the picks:

South Carolina 37 Texas A&M 20 - they don't have Johnny Halftime to carry them anymore. I predict pain.

Clemson 31 Georgia 28 - this should be a good one. Maybe the best of the week.

USC 41 Fresno St. 24 - Finally off the bogus NCAA sanctions USC starts to get back to form.

LSU 27 Wisconsin 17 - this should be an old school contest.

Agreed. Georgia v Clemson should be the best of the week.

Well it sounds more and more likely this kid made up the story to cover an injury. Too bad. If I were the coach and this turns out to be the case he would be finished.

I aw those reports too. If his story is proven to be untrue then he should be thrown off the team.

Well, so much for that feel good story.
"University of Southern California football star Josh Shaw has been indefinitely suspended after admitting he made up a story that he injured both ankles jumping off a balcony to save his nephew from drowning."

Yes, that's unfortunate. From all reports he has otherwise been a model student and player. Ran this grandfather's lanscaping business for him when he became ill. Just voted a team captain before this incident. So USC takes a double hit losing him and dealing with this silly distraction. My guess based on what I've read is that he got involved in an argument with his girlfriend and maybe someone called the cops. And this guy jumps or falls from the balcony when they show up. He's embarrassed and makes up this story which only makes things worse. Oh well, I can go back to accepting that most modern day atheletes are self-absorded dirt bags.

If Pete the poodle was still the head coach at USC, he'd hold a press conference and tell everyone what a swell kid he is, haven't any of you made a mistake in your life before, I'm all about giving kids a second chance, I say forgive and forget, all the while he'd be munching on a big wad of gum with that goofy, **** eating grin on his face.

They would also be winning games which is something that hasn't happened recently under Lame Kiffin (and a big thanks to Nick Saban for taking that dunce). The NCAA did a real number on SC. They had members on the board from Notre Dame and Miami when they did that. No conflict there. The most egregious sanctions handed down in the past 50 years based on the unsupported claim by a convicted felon. There is a widespread impression among college football fans that Pete ran a dirty program and "paid players." The sanctions had nothing to do with that. SC was dinged because a foreign student on the tennis team made long distance calls to her family on a school phone and Reggie Bush's parents were living rent free in some house in San Diego. Something that had nothing to do with Pete or SC since they can't monitor the behaviour of the parents of every college player even if they wanted too. A convicted felon claimed one SC coach learned about the house and did nothing. That coach is now suing the NCAA. In the meantime players like Johnny Halftime, the entire North Carolina team, and half of the college football world were caught receiving money from the boosters or commiting serious crimes and getting a slap on the wrist from the NCAA. The whole system is a joke. But Pete's reputation as some type of dirty coach -particularly in comparison to what goes on in the SEC - is unfounded. Mostly based on resentment for the beatings he put on those teams - including ND and the SEC - for nearly a decade. Those folks were glad to see him leave and want to believe those beatings happened only because SC was cheating. Oh well, onward to 52 games on ESPN this long weekend. And I got my hockey season schedule today for the upcoming AHL season.

The whole system is a joke.

The whole system is indeed a joke; the NCAA preaches student athletes on one hand, then whacks teams for the dumbest, most moronic things with the other. Once they get a program in their sites, it's all over; 99% of the time (as in this case), it's got to do with a winning program, so "they must be doing something wrong, so let's put them under a microscope and find something to lay the wood to them over."

And when they are done, it takes a long time (if ever) for a program to recover.

What a system.

I do my best to just enjoy the games. The only problem is that the NCAA always seems to get in the way.

A&M laid a major whooping on South Carolina. Great game to kickoff of the SEC network with the #9 team getting a beatdown at home and giving up 50+ points including over 500 yards passing to a Johnny Halftime-less Aggies. Spurrier looked like the guy in "Scanners" whose head explodes. Sumlin is a great coach.

UMd absolutely crushed powerhouse James Madison 52-7 to kick off it's Big 10 championship run to the National Title. Forget the Florida's and Alabama's, it's UMd for all the marbles. Bring on OSU, Big Blue, PSU, and MSU as UMd will steamroller them all. {eek3}^&grin:wink2::rolleyes2: -- Al

Great line on ESPN about next week's schedule full of mismatches for most of the top teams:

I hope you like cupcakes.

Well, thank goodness the Seminole Defense made stops when they had to. Too many missed interceptions and terrible throw and catch decisions on offense. Give the OSU Cowboys credit, them came to play. As to Maryland and since it is my alma mater, I can say this, it is not Fear the Turtle, it is another Fword the Turtle. I can't wait til they get welcomed to the Big 10. I still hate the decision and I dislike Randy E even more. I don't really care what they do! I know, I can tell you how I really feel!

Tom:

OSU is a great team, they should have been ranked in the pre-season Top 25. It is a solid win for FSU.

The NCAA needs to do something to penalize teams for playing these ridiculous cupcake games. Alabama is playing at home against Florida Atlantic this weekend! They could win that game 100-0 if they left the starters in beyond halftime. Scheduling a mismatch like that should result in an automatic drop in the polls. Bama only plays four road games the entire season. LOL. Florida hasn't played a regular season road game against a top 20 team since WWII. A couple of good games though in the PAC 12 this weekend. Oregon/Mich. St. and USC/Stanford. The PAC is looking good this year.

Ok, this made me laugh; I would have guessed the Korean War, not WWII.

And if you want to see the march of the tomato cans, check out the schedule Ohio State is playing this year; I think I read of their 11 games, exactly one is vs a ranked opponent.

Unreal...............

Forbes Magazine published this seasons average ticket prices. I suppose
scalpers would push the price higher for some games. I wonder how many
sell out.

Students evidently are not going to the games according to Time Magazine.Things have changed
since I was a undergrad student. Well, tickets were included in the tuition then. Not much television
coverage then either.

The top five schools with the most expensive average ticket prices are as follows: Notre Dame ($294), Ohio State ($246),
Michigan ($230), Nebraska ($210) and Texas A&M ($204).

The full Top 25:
1.Notre Dame ($294)
2.Ohio State ($246)
3.Michigan ($230)
4.Nebraska ($210)
