Well lately I have been searching through my boxes of childhood accumulation and found my comics.....Quite a large selection of yellowing storytelling.
It seems my fav's were GI COMBAT, and SGT ROCK...hhhoooah these are awesome. There is also a heap of Unknown soldier....perhaps this is where my interest in Dioramas stems from.
It reminded me of some comics I recieved from Scotland as a boy COMMANDO...awesome storytelling - There was always an airwar, Naval /jungle/ and Euro / or African story to be had.

Doesn't this lead me to what happend last week- I am in Costco- and looking through their mountainous Christmas book selection....there is 2 inch thick comic novels of COMMANDO-well didn't I call my ex and put them on my christmas list from our lovely daughter......I would rather get those than a Britain or 2 from the scratchy list she has had for a few years......

This leads me to today....out of curiosty I venture into a new "comic book" store that has just opened around the Corner from me.

Did we all know that DC comics had released a 8 book set of a somewhat mature content War comics?(the difference being- the old sarge ends up in bed or in the bath with a topless beauty, once in a while-compared to Sgt Rock rescuing gypsy women).....

These latest releases under the vertigo comics name, are called War Story...look fascinating!

Does anyone else share or recognise the genres (war comics/Toy soldiers) similarities? I would hazard that the CEO at CS does....my guess.

PS- just got all 8 on ebay from one seller! that was easy!!

I grew up as a War Comic kid, collecting Sgt. Rock, Army of War, Star Spangle War Stories, The Losers, G.I.Combat, Weird War etc. Later in life, I still have the entire Nam series..Except for NAM, I sold off my collection ,but still collect most any comic, Zombies or Aliens/Predator...Michael

I was a big comic reader. Sgt Rock was my favorite, along with GI Combat with the Stuart Tank knocking out Tiger Tanks. Another favorite was the German Ace in WWI. I can't remember the name of that comic, but I'll bet that Lancer knows. Also I think there was a Dell comic that produced comics based on actual battles. Wow, my memories are coming back. Charleston Comics had a comic on Australian soldiers (Iron Corporal?). Marines in Vietnam, a sargent and his sidekick.

I had a nice comic collection, sold most of them a few years back when I

discovered they were yellowing even though they were bagged in Mylar.

Original comic paper was poor quality. I still have all my Classics Illistrated

they are bagged and stored in special boxes.

I do have the EC hardbound editions of Frontline Combat ,

Weird Science Fantasy,,Panic, MAD and Two Fisted Tails

All of which are very cool, and a lot of fun to read. They are printed on much

better paper and should last long after the original comics have turned to

dust.

Sgt Rock and Easy Company, Sgt Fury and the Howling Commandos,The Haunted Tank and Enemy Ace were some of my favorites. Good read back in the day. I noticed a few years back some action figures of Easy Company and Sgt Rock. I think they were in 1/6 scale.
I still have some and like John said even though they are in plastic the paper is yellowing. Oh well memories of my youth.....:)

Ha memory of youth! As I type this I am looking for something in my Den I

had a 1/2 hour ago! I put it somewhere for safe-keeping now scant minutes

later I have no idea what happened to it!

I guess the mind is the first thing to go......and I expect you are the last

one to realize it!:D

Hell I'm going to just give up and pull down a volume of Two Fisted Tales!:)

The comic with the German ace was "Enemy Ace", (as mentioned by Fullyautomatic in his post), by DC Comics. The ace's name was Hans von Hammer, obviously based on von Richthofen down to the triplane and hunting on his estate. I still have these comics and bunchs more, like a lot of you. There was also a comic about a WW1 American ace based on Frank Luke but the name eludes me right now. I have those, too. One of my favorites was, I think, done by Dell and called "Combat". It took actual battles and campaigns and put them in comic form. There were such titles as
Midway, D-Day, Monte Cassino, and many others. They were great. -- Al

I thought of another one. I think it was called Mars Patrol from the 1960's. It was about these special forces guys fighting enemy with maroon uniforms. The good guys had different colored outfits. One green, one blue, one orange and one white. The enemy had night vision goggles and really cool AFVs. Regarding those Dell comics, I had Pearl Harbor, Tarawa and a naval battle in the Philippine seas. I also liked the two Indians who fought dinosaurs. One of my neighborhood friends stole all my Classics Illustrated. I had alot of those. This is fun.

The dinosaur fighters, was that called "Turok"? It sounds familier, but I'm not sure. I have a boatload of other war comics in storage that are not DC or Dell. They are kind of an "off" brand and they covered a bunch of different subjects but I can't remember the publisher or names. I also have a series on Viet Nam, but have the same memory malfunction. I haven't looked at them in 20+ years. -- Al

When I was getting married - the first time- my pals made a poster to sell tickets to my Stag party. it was a blown up "howling Commandos" comic book cover, with my picture super imposed on Sgt Furys head, riding through a group of "krauts" on a Motorcycle. funny stuff! I still have a copy.

Yes the Haunted tank was the reason I bought the FOV stuart.

Still have my collection of Our Army At War, G.I Combat and the Early version of Sgt. Rock. Stopped Sgt. Rock once the artwork fell by the wayside. When I have some down time I go down to the "Mann Hohle" German for Man Cave and grab an issue or two.
You can actually purchase them in book form now.

And let's not forget Mad Magazine. I know it's not Military related but what a great read. Still have my collection from the the 70's thru the 90's.:)

I still have my original War comics from the 60's. And Superman, Batman etc.
I really liked Adam Strange, and also the Haunted Tank.

I did not hear about that mature war comic series you referred to. I will have to check it out.

You and probably thousands of other dudes like me. Haunted tank inspired me to be an armor platoon leader which I hope to still do someday:)

You guys have hit all the nails on the head- such great stories. DC is redoing several issues with a more modern flair- recently redid Haunted Tank with Jeb Stuart jr as a black armor sergeant- it was pretty hyterical to see the look on the Confederate Generals face when he realized his desendent was black!! :D:D Anyway, it was pretty craptacular storywise but the artwork was A++++++++

Frank Tucci retold Sgt. Rock as a 6 part series 2 years ago that was amazing!! Had Rock landing on Utah with the BRO and following their push into France and squaring off with German Gerbigsjagers!! This was easily the greatest war comic series I ever read. Fantastic and I thoroughly recommend it- what was neat was that he plucked the Haunted tank into it, Johnny Red Cloud and the losers I think were in too.

War comics run the gammit these days and are seeking a really good balance in the telling of the stories.

The 'Nam was amazing as well- at least the first 20+ issues.

Never really got hold of many American comics but mostly British ones,
Battle was the best. They are now re-releasing all those Battle stories "Charley's War" Johhny Red, Darkie's Mob, Major Easy. A good read is When Comics Went to War. I had a whole ton of Battle comics as a boy back in the 1970's. My Mom threw them away. They would be worth a bit now I am sure.

Having been a tank "platoon" commander- I say go for it- What a rewarding experience to have a "troop" to train and mentor, and the mount to nurse and maintain....you only live once!

Titan Books have done Charley's War. They are no on volume 6 I believe. The others are due out next year. They are listed on Amazon.

Great stories there- though the earlier editions are getting hard to come by.
