Guys...

I just watched this programme last night. Having been in the towers with my wife and her cousin on the 6th sept 2001 before flying home that night (she lost her life in the attacks) I thought at the time that Giuliani did very well under the circumstances he faced and, watching this interview and documentary reinforced that. Right man at the right time.

These programmes also reinforce my admiration and respect to the people who lost their lives and, the firefighters and police and others who lost their lives trying to rescue those trapped.

Mitch,

Sorry to hear about your wife's cousin. I'm sure she'll be in everybody's thoughts next week.

Regards,

Sorry to hear about your loss. I lost some people I knew. A lot of people did.

I hate the "anniversary". I can still smell the smoldering ruins, the smoke. I hate it when I remember it and smell it. It never leaves me.

I have it burned into my physique as well, I was across the country, sitting on the couch holding my 2 children tightly, I will never forget, I never want to forget, some things are unforgettable and unforgiveable.

Our son was there with our local Urban search and Rescue unit. He doesn't talk about it very much (he lost some FDNY riends), but the stories he does tell are insightful . . . the warmth of the NYC people, the generousity ofmany outsiders, etc. The pictures he has . . . taken at ground level . . . are simply awesome. Neither he nor we (my wife is from the Bronx) will ever forget the heroic deeds done that day.

The word hero is often bandied around on pop stars and football players which, gets up my nose a bit when you see what others do in situations such as this.

My thoughts go to all those who died and those alive but, who will never be the same

There's "hero" and there's "role model". I wouldn't necessarily promote the lifestyle or views of a hero as much as I would a role model.

Seems to me, a role model leads the exemplary life while a hero can come from anywhere in a moment when he or she realizes that they are needed for something or a single act greater than themselves. A junkie who sees a stray animal in need, a homeless person who sees someone being robbed or worse, a welder who sees buildings coming down and offers his services.

That day did spur a great number of heroes. While we debate endlessly the minutia of current events, these particular heroes suffer from the actions they took. While, also, the actions they took and the deeds they did are corrupted by people who seek power and control.

We lose site of it so much in our day to day lives.
