US Special Forces patrol in Cambodia, 14 August 1969

Here is the third VN Diorama for Chicago. It represents a US MACSOG 4 man recon mission during operation Prairie Fire to monitor NVA infiltration sites (Roads, Trails and lager areas) in Cambodia for B-52 airstrikes. The dio is 8" square by 14" high. (excuse the pins....glue drying on the facings as just completed) My photo skills aren't up to Steve's or Robins but getting better all the time. Please stop into room 4401 (right around the corner from K&C) as I'd like to meet as many of you as I can.

The jungle is beyond realistic. It literally looks like you shrunk an actual portion of a jungle down then put your superb figures in it.

Great looking diorama Pat and the thing I like the best is the depth in the scene that you have created from such a small base area. The emergence of the patrol from the dense jungle is well done. Regards Greg.

Thanks for all the great comments guys.....To take advantage of the small space, I built the diorama on 4 levels, so each figure would be a bit above the ones in front. In the rear, I made a 14" high "wall", painted green and black, then covered in 2 layers (to give it depth) hobby plants from a local craft store, which has a wide variety of "jungly" looking plants that when primed and painted look very realistic. The creepers and vines are string dyed brown, dipped in white glue/water, then sprinkled with hobby grass used by model railroad guys. I used the same techniques for the trees (From my garden-the roots of tomato plants make great looking undergrowth), as everything in the jungle is covered in moss and rot. I was trying to convey the denseness of the jungle (sometimes it would take us most of a day to go one kilometer) yet still show each patrol member. Whole project took less than a day to make. My next "jungle" theme will be a much larger Marine vs NVA ambush when I get back from the show. Hope to see many of you there (room 4401)
Thanks also to Steve for the tips on covering the bases with "stuff"-used white glue to add the pieces of undergrowth to each figures base to make them invisible.

Great tips there on building your own diorama, which will go a long way in helping Treefroggers create their own. Some of which will be finding their way into my mine.^&grin

Saw his work in person at the show. If I knew my wife wouldn't kill me I might have walked out of there with 1 or 2 of his dios. They were awesome to say the least.
