We had a wonderful ACW event over four days in Frankfort, KY this past week. Five authentic ACW bands from around the country played a series of concerts and parades free to the public. Bands from PA, AR, AL and KY participated in the Coronets and Cannons gathering. The bands ranged in size from 7 - 21 musicians. Some of the bands, the Wildcat Band (105th PA Regimental Band) from Indianna, PA and our own Saxton's Coronet Band were in the movies Gettysburg and God's and Generals (won't hold that against them). They performed in period uniforms with instruments dating back to 1848. The highlight was an open air concert "Battle of the Bands" Sunday afternoon. Four artillery pieces, three Confedrate and one Union, fired at the the climax of the Battle Hymn of the Republic. One concert was held in the restored 1911 old Frankfort Theater, built during the days of Vaudville. It was a great event and many ACW enthusiasts on this forum such as Mike, Ken, THe Captain, UK Reb, Rob, etc would have enjoyed seeing this piece of history presented so well. Here's a link to some of the bands: http://cornetsandcannons.com/html/participants.html

The music played on period instruments has a distinctive sound. I like when folks go to the effort to recreate the period music.

That's wonderful, people often overlook the evolution of musical instruments.
