Covid 20 Restoration- A New Hope (Prussian Hussar). (1 Viewer)

I hope forum members and families are coping well in these trying times.

Having seen how many projects Blaster is working on I thought it time to get back to restoring some of the old kits and poorly assembled figures I have in my box of shame.

This figure was covered in black paint all over. The good thing about this figure being that it was complete, including sword and sabretache/cords, which seem the first to break or go missing. So after a soak in paint stripper, some filing and sanding and reassembling this is a really nice casting. I primed the figure in Tamiya fine primer.

Looking at catalogues it appears to be MA0550 NCO, Hussar Battalion No 11, 1792-1804, sculpted by Peter Rogerson.

An odd thing about this figure being that the right arm is different from the one shown in the catalogue in that the figure is holding a despatch message. The cuff and knot match though, so I will be keeping it that way.

The Osprey book this figure was modelled for is Prussian Cavalry of the Napoleonic Wars 1792-1807- the figure on the left as shown below.

They give the following uniform distinctions.
Dolman-yellow

Collar and cuffs of Dolman-green

Cords and buttons- NCO's white

Pelisse- dark green, Fur trim-grey (officers), white for ORs

Sash cords- red

Sabretache- white barrels, red field with white trim

Additionally a company called The Lost Battalion make a lovely 75mm figure of this subject which I will use also as a painting guide.

Any other uniform references for this figure are welcome.

One of the upside of this situation of 'home isolation' is have time to do something you wanted to do for a while, but couldn't find the time. Now you have time, no other distractions or excuses, so enjoy the 'quiet time' and do something productive

OK. Getting back to this thread.

Firstly, John- very nice work area and also admiring your new display area.

So back to the figure. I am trying something a little different with Vallejo paint, something that the 1/35 modellers do. That is building the paint up in very thin layers. At the moment there are three coats of flesh and three of white for the trousers. I gather the advantage of this is building up the paint layer more smoothly. Anyway will give it a go.

Ordered some Vallejo yellows and greens to paint the pelisse and dolman.

While I was doing that I noticed a project I had neglected. You may notice that the hussar has some smaller friends.

Like Victor I have a few projects that need revisiting, or in this case finishing. Time to expand this thread while the world is quiet.

Around two years ago I started building the Master Box Napoleon's Red Lancer, with the idea of making a small diorama in a terrarium.

This is the kit and as a few of you will know it is 1/35 and CONSIDERABLY smaller than 54mm (1/32).

I built and painted the female figure, the gloss coat of which has since yellowed to some degree.

The point where I gave up was the horse. The saddle just didn't sit right, so I left it. Looking over the components this morning I noticed that there is a part in the kit (part 31), which appears to be a roll which fits under the front of the saddle and fills the space between the horse's shoulders and saddle, that isn't shown in the construction diagram. I cleaned it up and glued it into position and now it fits nicely on the horse. (some images below).

The other problem that I shied away from was the size of the bridle. The kit comes with two tiny bridle components that are two small to fit reins inside the rings. They are considerably smaller than 54mm and I will have to make something from fine wire to fit electrical tape reins.

The images show where I am up to.

Will post some more images as I progress with these two projects now.

Did some work on the little horse's bridle today. Drilled out the corners of his mouth and made some replace ones from fine silver solder. Glued into position and they don't look too bad.

Once the reins are in they won't look as over sized.

Yes, Hussars take some very fine brushwork to get the lace right,

seen here with my ROSE 7YW Prussian Hussars ..... and it's well worth the effort

By the way, do I spy a French Horse Gunner by Hinchliffe in the background????

A rainy day. Making some progress on the Hussar and the little horse. Need to sort out mounting of the Hussar's left hand, sword, sabretache ans straps which are all one casting.

A bit more progress. Masking tape reins made for the horse and painting finished. Moving on to the Red Lancer figure and doing the sabretache/swords for both. I painted the crown and cipher freehand on the Prussian Hussar sabretache-fiddly!

Slowly coming over the hill on the Prussian Hussar today. I managed to mount the left hand/sword/sabretache satisfactorily today. Will let the glue set for a while them go over any paint touch ups the figure needs and in a day or two a gloss coat if its sunny.

Finally finished painting the Dutch Lancer. Both figures drying in the sun for a few days before a gloss coat.

I found the Lancer particularly difficult to build and paint due to the micro size of some of the smaller parts (there is a noticeable difference between 1/32 and 1/35) so this has been a perseverance project more than anything. The New Hope Hussar went together much more easily.

Getting close to the finish now.

Finally finished my Covid builds.

Firstly the Masterbox Red Lance and little lady in the glass terarium. Possibly my first and last Masterbox Napoleonic. Please excuse a bit of glue visible on the hoofs and lady's clogs but they were too small to pin to the base.
