I began fiddling with dioramas about a year ago. And I've become a bit obsessed with backgrounds, as they seem to make all of the difference. I've been using posterboard and acrylic paint to get the look I want--sometimes it works, other times not so much. And also because that's about all I can afford. But not everyone has the ability to paint backgrounds, and photos don't always work either. Does anyone have ideas for more realistic backgrounds that are accessible to the average diorama builder? Some of my photos are now in Treefrog photo gallery if anyone would like to comment. Phillip Johnson--I'm number one in line so easy to find. Obviously, the first photo with the samurai has a real background--a live oak I found in uptown New Orleans. But all of the other backgrounds are acrylic on posterboard.
I admire the effort that people put into these dioramas--time consuming and difficult but fun to look at.
