After the long retreat through France and the Low Countries, the loss of Aachen, the defeat of the Allies at Arnhem was good news for the German people, but even so, with the Russians ready to force their way into Germany itself, the news of this advance in the West - and of the surrender of many Americans - was too good an opportunity for the newsreel people to miss....................

Kevin,

Just give us a shout and I'll get this stuff requisitioned for you. I'd hate for you to have to go the disco without the proper attire. :)

Great sepia shots BTW.

Cheeky b@&&er, that's the last time I share my special 'Tea' with you!:D;)

Actually though, now I come to think on it.......................:rolleyes:

I was reading 'Ardennes, the Battle of the Bulge 1944-45' by J Mark Connell ISBN 1-85753-323-2. I noted that there was a reference to the US troops 'acquiring' automatic weapons outside the official establishment.

I looked into this a little more and found a more detailed reference in a book of the same series, Battles in Focus, called 'Casino 1944' by Ian Gooderson ISBN 1-85737-319-7.

This explained in more detail how the US forces were relatively light on LMG/automatic weapons compared with their European allies and enemies. The US infantry division had :

14253 men v 18347 British with 6518 rifles against 9437 rifles British per division full establishment

IMG_5597red3.jpg

636 machine guns against 1322 British

IMG_5619red1.jpg

IMG_5598red1.jpg

144 mortars against 359 British

57 AT guns v 110 British

66 medium and light guns v 72 British

2012 v 3347 vehicles

The only upside was 557 bazookas against 436 piats

IMG_5594red1.jpg

NB the British in particular had a real manpower shortage in both Italy and in W Europe, so real establishment would be much less.

The Germans also had real shortages but like the British, had as the basic unit the rifle section with LMG and automatic weapon(s), they also had panzerfausts.

I often wondered why computer and wargames always have US formations as having higher firepower than everyone else though.......................

You could argue, that with the US Rifles consisting of the semi-automatic Garand and possibly the M1 Carbine (not sure if that would be included in 'rifle' numbers), there was less need for large numbers of fully automatic weapons, vs. the British bolt action .303, with it's slower rate of fire.

As you say though, still wouldn't explain the discrepancies depicted in movies.

This is the discussion I would like to have - the Lee Enfield was thought to be machine guns at Mons in WW1 so that can't be the answer can it? Was it so different from the American rifle? The Germans had the MP40, MG34/42 and later the assault rifle, the russians changed much of their troops to their SMG.

The Brit section had a 3 man bren group, two with rifles, lead by a lance corporal as the heart of it, plus six rifle armed squaddies and a sten gun armed corporal section leader. All the men carried the same .303" ammo and bren magazines.

The Germans had semi/automatic weapons and rifles in their squads plus an MG42 more like the British, plus integral panzerfaust?I have not managed to find a detailed reference of US Army squad equivalent yet, but thought it was rifle armed and a BAR?

A British Battalion was composed of four rifle companies - 360 men in 12 platoons (30 men?). Each platoon had the sections outlined above plus a PIAT and 2" mortar.

In each battalion there were a further 340 men in supporting and service units. The battalion support company, in 13 bren carriers, provided much of its punch, with Vickers MGs, a 3" mortar platoon with 6 mortars and 6x6pdr AT guns in its AT platoon.

All I could find about the US battalion was that it had 3 rifle companies (cf4), each of three platoons of 36 men (?larger squads but no LMG) with a support company - ? 30 cal MGs and 60mm mortars?

If - and I say 'if' as reported - the US troops were 'borrowing' Thompson SMGs and the like, they must have felt the strain in a firefight? I am no expert in this area - Can anyone help with this discussion???????

The Germans prepared to push on to the vital road centre of St Vith.........
