My Ukrainian FB friend just told off my Russian FB friend. Uh oh!

Have to admit that I don't fully understand all the angst. If the people of Crimea want to be part of Russia, and something like 95% voted to join, who is to say they should not be permitted to do so? The intervention of the Russian military was unwise, but there doesn't seem to be any fighting going on.

That's the problem, they haven't exactly been given a choice have they and who said 95% of Crimea wants to be part of Russia......the Russian's?!

This is pure thuggery on an international scale and the west is limited in what they can do to prevent it.

My understand is that a vote was taken and the results were that about 95% want to leave the Ukraine and join Russia. I haven't seen any claims that the election was rigged or that the majority of citizens in that area are not pro-Russian. It seems to be the general consensus that most people there want to rejoin Russia. I don't claim to be any expert on that, though, but that is what I read. The decision to intervene with the military appears to be the basis of contention to the west. But if that is what the people of that area want, why would anyone else take a stand which is contrary to the desires of the affected people?

WOW! I don't even know where to start with a reply. So, I'll just end with this from another thread that applies
here. UNBELIEVABLE.

Gents, the situation in the Crimea is a political one. We have people from all over the world on this forum, and delving into the morass of the Crimean situation is a surefire way to have a forum meltdown.

Let's stick with the forum rules and keep politics out of the conversation.

The Crimea is fair game...only if the Light Brigade is involved!

It's a very complex issue. Crimea was part of Russia since the 1700's and only became part of the Ukraine in 1954 in an administrative reorganization where it was an autonimous republic as part of the Ukraine with it's own parliament. The Crimea is about 60% Russian, 25% Ukrainian and 15% Muslim Tatars. And the 3 groups have a long history of atrocities against each other. Good luck fixing this one

The situation is also compounded by other factors: access to the Mediterranean for the Russian Navy and that the West has been inviting former portions of Russia into the EU. It's only logical to think that the Russians would eventually get annoyed at this. Moreover, Eastern Europe has historically been a rather combustible area.

This is all makes for a very dangerous situation.

Sorry fella's, wasn't aware of Peter's post in another thread regarding this subject. He's right of course and thanks 'BLReed' for quoting it. On that note and out of respect I won't say another word on the topic.
Cheers.
