Hello all:

This morning I'd like to share with you a review of Collector's Showcase (CS) CS00424 Erwin Rommel with Removable Base. My driver of the Steyr Command Car has been patiently awaiting the arrival of Erwin Rommel. Unfortunately, the $33 figure is sold separately.

First Impressions
Small box, single figure, some excitement but a well-known plan to place him in the back of the Steyr as pictured on the front of the 3" x 4" box. Honestly, I couldn't wait to get him out of the box to see the detailing. Turned-up nose and a bit Disney Haunted Mansion "ghoulish"; but hey, it's still a General Rommel figure.

Rating
Assembly/Components: 5/5 - I love the removable stand! A paper map is also included and can be placed in Rommel's left hand. Don't know if I'll fold it up.
Color Scheme: 5/5 - nice pleasing Afrikakorps colors as one would imagine. Nice hat and pants color.
Design/Mold: 4/5 - turned up nose, a bit ghoulish. Same face on another figure would most likely not be identified as Rommel. (-1)
Paint Quality: 4/5 - back of my figure has chipped/missing black paint on bottom of one boot as well as some light marks/chips on back of hat (-1). This was a new purchase. In comparison, the Steyr Command Car figures are better painted and seem more detailed than Rommel.
Decals: n/a - none
Details: 4/5 - I like the eagle on the hat, the goggles, and the binoculars. In addition, the Afrikakorps arm band looks pretty good. What I don't like is a combination of maybe the paint color and shadowing on his jacket as well as some roughness on the upper half/jacket which seems to give an unfinished appearance (-1).
Figures: n/a - being a figure set.
Playability: 4.5/5 - nice to have a stand but not much playability with a single figure. Can't expect too much but -.5.
Price: 4.5/5 - single figure at $33; some of the hard-core collectors might say this is a good price, but seems like a lot of $ for one 2 1/2 inch figure. (-.5).
Display/Eye Appeal: 5/5 - check out the pictures. I am tempted to knock off another -.5 for the face, but I already did above. He still looks awesome in the Steyr.
Overall Rating: 36/40 or 90%. Although an A on the traditional 90-100% grade scale, I would rate this closer to a B+ given all things considered.

Summary
Treefrog Treasures forum member Mitch said it best when comparing the CS Grenadier Assault Team to more recent releases by CS, "None of the rather bizarre ghoulish comments applied". While Rommel is a nice figure and makes a wonderful addition to the Steyr Command Car, in looking at him closely, he could be related to Disneyland Haunted Mansion's gravekeeper. You know, the guy with the lantern and dog. The overall quality is a bit on the sloppy side, especially in comparison to the two figures that come with the Steyr Command Car. It's probably not as much the mold as it is the paint and finer detailing.
However, the figure is still a nice addition to one's Afrikakorps collection and I would purchase again to complete the set. Overall rating A-/B+.

Interesting personal review. Hope you don't mind but, I have taken and posted three shots of the first Rommel as a comparison as I believe they are the better versions and, more detailed. I did state the Ghoulish look as many said that on this forum. I don't use that or, actually se that when I look at CS though, I can see why people would say it. I go for battle worn and weary expressions and, many of the CS figures or, early figures had an almost 1000 yard stare to them.

I was asked by one collector if the faces were ''knobbly'' as they looked like it but, they are actually smooth and its just painting that makes them look as they do.

So we have two DAK generals to address. Personally, for me, I think CS has lost a lot of its appeal charm and detail in the last few years. I now only collect the LAH though, I have ordered the new US MG team as that looked very nice.

Third picture is pants but, you get the drift
Mitch

Joe...

Great pictures and its a great place to visit. I liked the detail on the figures with the KC and RK I also liked the K&C Rommel from the desert Taxi. spoilt for Rommel figures. Perhaps time for CS to address the 8th Army
Mitch

WO thanks again for another TCS review, their figures have improved significantly and I like the extra features such as removable bases.

Let's hope they release Rommel's "Greif" Halftrack Command Vehicle, and Meyer's larger version of course ^&grin

Mitch ,

Thanks , i've been to the museum twice & i love it there , my wife does NOT so much , as i was told next time i have to go back by myself...lol
I've got WS34 Rommel in my DAK collection , think that one is great IMO...I have not seen the Rommel from the desert taxi in person...I also have a Rommel made by some unknown Russsian company that looks decent...I've never seen CS's Rommel in person but thought about buying it...I do not own any CS stuff ,but my thinking is you can never have too many Rommel's IMO...Also , Again great job to WO for his thoughful review threads...
I agree with the 8th Army suggestion...That is also something i need to start adding more to in my own collection...

Joe

I bet the museum didn't have a photo of Rommel's Desert Taxi :wink2: ^&grin

Matt,

No desert taxi or pic...They do have an Afrika Korps Pz III & Pz IV there though !

Joe

Hi Joe, not surprised mate as Rommel's Desert Taxi as such never existed, the K & C set was pure fiction, but to be kinder let's say they used (a lot of) artistic license :wink2:

Thank you all for the feedback. I like your version Mitch - thanks for sharing the detailed pictures. The museum shots of the uniform are equally nice and great for comparison.

EDIT: Oh, and in regard to future N. Africa releases, I'd really like to see a PAK 40 in desert tan (just like the existing winter and Normandy Pak 40), and we definitely need some British 8th Army. I'd hate to have to switch to K&C now that I've got some CS items going. K&C offers quite a bit.
