And hows the cheescake in Chicago mate?:)I'm getting hungry now!!!

Rob

Ahhh chesscake, I work 5 blocks from the Cheesecake factory (it's a restaurant) and the cheesecake is most excellent. The varieties would simply blow your mind, not to mention drool.

Yes we visited the cheesecake factory in Florida on an almost daily basis,i want to be buried there!!!:D.Wonderful cheesecake,so much cheesecake so little time!

I prefer tomato sauce and hot "English" mustard on my hotdogs, usually washed down with a coke or beer. I've never been a fan of cheese cake and prefer Carrot Cake and Chocolate Mud cake. Aussie hamburgers usually have beetroot with the more usual lettuce and tomato, not to US tastes I guess but we do like beetroot on our burgers :)

Ketchup and Mustard, must give that a go.Never heard of Beetroot on a burger though, sound interesting.I also love the Chocolate mud cake,or 'Death by Chocolate' as its sometimes known over here.

Hey guys-

Biggest and most sincerest apologies for my post- just had a bad day. I do get deeply disappointed with my fellow countrymen at times- though to put a blanket statement on that is pretty irresponsible on my part. It's probably just issues I have with rationalizing some decisions I make. Shannon- that is a wonderful project you have going and I admire both you and your husband for that ambitious undertaking.

Alright, I will stop here- don't want to get "off topic".

Again, sorry to all for kind of ruining this thread.

BTW Oz- I guess the dinner party rules all depend on who the host is- as I said, I would be more than happy if friends brought food and beverage. Within my inner circle, it's kind of expected actually as we all have kids and it helps cut the costs down to the host.

Imo you're not ruining the thread or getting off topic, just discussing everyday issues and culture. Most days I ask myself why some people do what they do, I guess some people just get to upset to care what their actions result in.

Despite what the woman at my work said it seems from the posts here that there isn't a set in stone rule in the US regarding who supplies the drinks, which is much the same here.

By ketchup I presume you mean tomato sauce.

Damian

IN SA it is the custom to bring the host loads of K and Country toy soldeirs as a token of appreciation for the wonderful burnt meat you will get at the braai. Did I mention that you are all invited to my house for a braai

I spread some hot mustard on top of the butter (both sides of roll) then add the dog with sauce on top, sometimes I use bbq sauce in lieu of tomato sauce.

Beetroot is actually very nice on a hamburger, McDonalds and Hungry Jacks (Burger King) downunder both have an Aussie burger on the menu: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamburger

I'll get my wife to write up her recepe for her home made Aussie burgers and post it here in the next few days.

More like my cholestoral is rising under the cheesecake spell:eek:

Ketchup or catsup, is an entirely different animal then tomato sauce or tomato paste, yes it still comes from a tomato, but the taste is much different. It's strictly a condiment goes well with hamburgers, frenchfries and the like. Definetly not to be used on hotdogs, if you request ketchup on your hotdog at any respectable hotdog stand , you will greeted with a look of disdain and disgust. In some neighborhoods it could result in capital punishment.

I agree that ketchup is not used on hot dogs in Chicago where I grew up and spent half my life. To this day we never put it on hot dogs. It was a cardinal sin and the hot dog stand would have a fit. Here in Michigan , I still get upset when people use ketchup on hot dogs. They talk about Chicago deep dish pizza but everyone I knew ordered thin crust pizza. Leadmen

Hey Shannon-

It is rather unfortunate that we are seeing the quality of the people of the State of Minnesota coming through in dealing with the tragedy of the bridge collapse- my thoughts and prayers go out to all those who were affected by that terrible incident.

Nonetheless, I am pleased to see that those Minnesotans out there are proving me very very wrong!!

Yeah, a lot of people order the thin crust and I admit that I often do too, however if I go to a place known for their deep dish, I go for it everytime. Sauce makes the pizza, doesn't matter if it's pan or thin, same sauce makes it good.

Did you go to high school here in Chicago? I was a St Patrick Shamrock.

Is the deep dish pizza from Uno's? I hardly order deep dish but the sauce is good. I grew up on the south side and went to Calumet HS. Never been to Cubs park. White Sox yes. I also lived in Evergreen Park after I got married. Leadmen

Thanks, but personally I can't see any difference between ketchup on a hamburger or a hotdog. I have seen plenty of hotdog stands featured in US shows such as "Law & Order - Criminal Intent" where there appears to be some formal way of ordering hotdogs. But we don't have any hotdog street vendors in Australia and this may explain our ambivalence towards their treatment :)

Btw, Criminal Intent is one of my favourite yank tv shows with Detective Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) being a bit of a hero of mine ever since he played Edgar/Cockroach in "Men In Black".

Here are some wikipedia links about Aussie Culture: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture_of_Australia and Aussie Cuisine: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_cuisine

Well, I guess we'll have to chalk this one up to cultural differences eh?
