Curio Cabinets...what's the best brand? (1 Viewer)

Slightly off topic as IKEA is probably not he best brand. But their glass display cases are very "light" and affordable.

I agree, now that is a soldiers room. Inspires me to get back to work on mine. We are kind of off topic but good to see how everyone displays their collection. I also agree that IKEA may not be the best cabinet but looks good in this picture. Chris

Do the curio manufacturers tell you how much weight the glass shelves hold? I bought a cheap one off of Amazon and it did not say what the capacity is on the glass shelves.

Any thoughts?

Just had a look on the IKEA website there is a whole host of glass front cabinets to choose from ranging from $59.99 - $670.00 (Canadian)

Brad, all 3 of my cabinets stated the weight limit on each shelf from the manufacturer, for example the limit is 8 pounds on the IKEA cabinets I used. Another good thing to know when setting up things. Chris

I have been really lucky on curio's. The first one was from a antique/thrift shop. It's the only one wide enough to get the airplanes to display in any number. It was $150, my most expensive one but also the heaviest by far.I hit the yard sales and lately in my area there have been numerous curio's. This Howard Miller was originally $600. Got it for $75. The other one I'm not sure the name of it but another yard sale find on the cheap. I really like the IKEA one's people are showing. I wish I had a store close by. My other cabinets not pictured were from the Bombay company when they were going out of business.
Most of my cabinets have lights but honestly I have never used them. So my thoughts are if you can hit the yard sales, second hand stores or thrift shops you might be able to score some great deals. Just some thoughts.

Yup, my curio was a "floor model" that Sam Levitz had here in Tucson and marked down half off, I asked the rep. why so cheap he said, a new one on the way, next stop my soldier room!! and agree if you can get the time to hunt the Saturday yard sales/Estate sales man you can find some decent stuff, I also picked up a nice book shelf awhile back for 60.00 snappers and it's easily worth a few hundred.

I was looking at the display cabinets above, and it really reminded me of how inefficient curios can be at storing figure-sets. Unlike Andanna's cabinets, too much space gets wasted "overhead," in the void above the figures and below the next shelf. That said, this can be somewhat offset by the purchase of "shelf-kits" from the manufacturer, Pulaski or Miller for instance. The practical impact of the shelf-kits is to double the number of shelves available for display and storage. And while this solution isn't as elegant or efficient as Andanna's setup, it's a heck of a lot better than the shelf configuration that I'm afraid many collectors live with in their homes.:redface2:

I use wooden plinths and lucite risers to make my shelves multi level

Very old Thread, but see Photo in Post 1 and then 17 or 18. I much prefer the Howard Miller, large Curio. Much wider and deeper than other manufacturers. Heavy though, no chance of tipping. The additional depth is great to have. Expensive nearing two thousand dollars per case now with shipping, a few years ago under $1,400 each. Dimension in the link are under post 17 or 18. Useable Shelf Space is around 48" x 20"( if needed I can measure). Case is 80 inches x 50 inches x 21.5 inches. Cabinet separation needed for the Front Sliding Doors.

Wish I had two more of these.
