Currently produced 1/32 Sets of Toy Soldiers by AIRFIX (1 Viewer)

It took more time than I had expected but the reworked figure is now almost ready to be molded.
Sprued up and only with a few minor holes left to be filled a rubber mold can now be poured. ^&grin

Will the plastic be soft when casted? If so I'd like to buy some?

Plastic General

Thank you for your interest. Good news I just got some new plastic that seems to be very close to the PVC-type plastic that was used for 1/32 Airfix figures in the past. Actually it feels like the material Timpo Toys where made of. Just finished a test casting and the result appears very promising. :smile2: I had to adjust the newly made mold first and it seems to cast fine now. Anyway I will go ahead and use some of the semi flexible plastic as I did before to do a couple of castings, after that I will switch to the new stuff. Once I got the sesults of both casting lines I will put them up here - hope everything goes according to plan. {sm4}

On another note, these are the (LOST) WWII AIRFIX poses.
The only way to get them is to buy the vintage boxes of 29 figures.
SHOT US PARATROOPER & DEAD GURKHA
Does anyone know what happened to the molds for these 2 figures??P1010825.JPG

Hi,
just finished the rough sculpt for the Winter Version of an Airfix 1/32 German Officer. I will rework the head once I have got the intermediate casting of this one done. Again this one was fun to built. %^V
I can not proceed any further at this stage since the non-drying oil based clay I have used is very sensitve and must be handled with great care. Hope to get the casting done quickly, than comes the detailing and after that I final mold can be poured - well just like before on the first figure.
Enjoy {sm4}

You GOTTA do something about his pants!
He looks like he's wearing mid-evil tights like a NORMAN.
Perhaps baggie winter pants?

Plastic General

Next two pictures show front and back of the casted "Rough". The officer now needs some smoothing up and some refineing of detail. After that is done I will add some protective winter gear to his head in order to represent the makeshift character of his 1941 protective winter clothing.
As you can see the soft plastiline did not survive the molding process.{sm2}

Here is another single picture of my conversion. Even though the combination of the worn protective winter cloths allready might look ludicrous this is in line with the actual situation after the sudden fall of winter in Russia back in 1941. The sudden change of climate caused chaos among german troops effected.
Just a few miles short of Moscow the entire "Ostfront" tumbled but eventually did not fall. Huriedly gathered winter cloth -most of it of civilinan origin - was rushed to the troops at the Eastern Front. Almost anything seemingly fit to protect against the freezing temperatures was thankfully used by the troops in need. Cleverly designed and uniform protective cloth to battle the sub zero conditions where a matter of the winters yet to come at the Eastern Front. As for winter camouflage, white sheets where used many taken of field hospitals etc. and tailored up by the men who used them on frontline duty. No other army of WWII had to put up with such odds than the german army of that dreadfull winter 1941/1942. Caught by suprise and let down by the military High Command.

Once ready I will put up the finished figure.

Thank You very much Mark. Casting my own figurines or comissioned conversions has become a major part of my hobby activities. Sometimes much to my regret since free time to do sculpting and painting has become a luxury. Since I do lack the discipline I got to many projects going on at the same time. You might have allready found this http://www.treefrogtreasures.com/fo...A-bid-of-sculpting-casting-and-a-little-magic
It is overdue to be updated but I am on it .....
Next to pictures are of the almost finished master figure of the converted Airfix 1/32 German Army Officer. It needs a few more mild sessions of engraveing and sanding but I guess I will pour the mold tomorrow.
Thanks for watching - rgds

Thanks and you are welcome Wolfgang ! If possible in the future can you discuss your "shrinking " or downsizing technique ? I had always heard of casting resin in a vacum but you are doing the opposite with the best results I have seen ! I have many figures started myself ( probably over 600 ) sometimes I work on one or a few till I get tired of it ,then I work on another ,it helps to give a refreshed look at what I had been working on and it seems to help to see what is right and wrong with a figure. Maybe one day I will actually finish something ! Keep up the wonderful work ,I don't think there can ever be too many toy soldier poses ! Mark

Good to see that there are other converters and scratchbuilders around. I would love to see you share some of your work here Mark. As you rightly wrote it does help a lot to get a refreshed look at things and some well ment friendly comments by fellow members might just do the trick. As for casting plastic my best advice is to google for "Pressure casting resin" which will provide a lot of interesting results. Like with so many other things there isn't a - Right Or Wrong - really. I got all the vacuum equipment as well but rarely use it these days, it simply never really worked for me. Haveing said that I do know that others are achieveing fantastic results useing it. Best thing is to get organized by decideing what you which to accomplish. Next step is to find a method to get things going. When useing any of the multiple chemical products available never trust in what is said on the tin. Toy Soldier collectors are rarely the group of people manufactures have in mind. If anything goes wrong or you just won't take the trouble you might want to source out mold-building and casting to a "Professional".
In my experience you might find people who claim that they are up to do such a job for you but often fail to deliver. To get really good casting results can be very, very difficult.
That is why I got hooked on the subject ...
Kind Regards
Wolfgang

Thanks again Wolfgang ! Please do not feel obligated to reply to this reply, ( I do not to interrupt your work ) I just wanted to add that I am considering having someone do 3d printing to create a "master Figure " from an original clay /putty sculpt and also 3d print a larger or smaller figure if I desire !

While the new mold for the officer figure is resting I test casted the 3 infantrymen useing a semi rigid resin which I dyed grey this time. Also started on converting a third figure from the 1/32 Airfix Gerrman Infantry set. I found the material used for the reissued figures quite good when it comes to converting. But you got to be carefull with smaller thin sections they like to brake rather easily.
