Currently produced 1/32 Sets of Toy Soldiers by AIRFIX (1 Viewer)

Hi,
I had to overcome some issue with a recently bought silicone rubber that kept me busy for a few days.
Anyway it seemed all solved now and I am working on two further ranks right now. ^&grin
As for the nature of the chosen sculpting material I will have to apply some two part epoxy clay on one of the sculpts.
The officer is now finished and cast and I am looking forward to paint him once I got all further figures of the project done. As you can see I experimented with some different colours dureing the sculpting/casting process which brings up the question wether ther is someting like a favourite colours in plastics?
I am not a 1/30-1/32 collector and as I wrote this is a study object to me still I am greatfull for all your input.
Still got a bit of time left this evening so I will do some more sculpting right after this.....
Thank you all for your intrest.
Kind Regards
Wolfgang

Next rough figure done. It was not easy to sculpt the coat and camouflage shirt "underneath"
the belt and equipment. See how bad the clean-up of the face turned out. I am not a fan of the type of plastic
that was used to produce these figures. There will have to be a massive clean and further work to be done to the resin copy once it has been casted.

Here the finished castings. The thin gun barrel gave me a hard time not to speak of the horrible rtv rubber I had to use. Looking forward to receive another much better material next week.

Hope to get some more sculpting done today. Here is the next figurine in it's current status.
I removed some of the sufrace detail and started sculpting/converting useing some Epoxy Putty.
Useing this self hardening putty gives me the benefit of useing the softer not drying clay later on to sculpt the rest of the figure. Once hat is down a "Rough" will be casted in resin which gives me a solid base for further refinement.

The new mold is poured and the next an final figure of this project is going to be prepared.
This time two figurines have to contribute parts to create a new figure. Cutting them apart was
not easy as the plastic proofed to be very sturdy and it took ages until my trusted Tamiya saw
managed the cut. Resulting single parts of the figure will be joined together and beefed up with clay. Before that, lot's of work left for the X-acto knife.{sm2}

I started poseing the next figure. This time a real conersion with parts from two figurines. I did not like the pose of the soldier holding a MP40. I was trying to create a more exciting pose. I use the wire of a medium sized paper clip to arrange the pose until I get what I want. Drill the holes and insert the paperclip. By trial and error find out what length the wire ought to have. Due not use glue that will limit your freedom of poseing the figure. Instead push the various single part firmly onto the wire. Once happy with the pose close the gap with epoxy clay. Once dry I will clean up the joints and sculpt collar of the coat, a scarf and a belt around his belly. The belt will be my guideline once the sculpting of the clothes starts in soft clay.
To be honest it is more fun to alter the pose first. At this stage you could eventually sculpt any figure of any army without too much hussle. Once the framework is done by finding a suitable pose you are more or less ready to go - enjoy

All is looking good at the mold-makeing-front.
My old trusted RTV rubber has finally arrived hipp, hipp ....
Back to buisness with decent material now.

I always wondered what that soldier is carrying for a weapon. It doesn't look like any MP-40 I've ever seen. "Artistic License" perhaps?

This time I used two different types of clay. I started sculpting the helmet cover, collar and belt in two part epoxy clay. After that had cured I smoothed and reworked some areas and started sculpting the clothes useing the red-brown coloured clay. This clay is really soft and fun to work with. Afterwards I tried something new by useing a firmer clay (the grey one) rolling it out into a thin sheet useing baby powder as a release agent and cut the pattern of the snow-camo. Attachng it to the figure and smoothing all areas with a simple brush and water finished the job. Next is mold building and casting
