Guys

Read this in a UK newspaper yesterday:-

Delay overseas Christmas purchases. Customs duty is charged on goods worth £18.00 ($27.00US) or more bought online from non-EU countries. But from December 1st, the limit is to be increased to £105 ($158.00US)

I have not heard a peep about this until I read it in the paper-Have any of you?
Is this another tax give-away from Uncle Hamish Brown (then you can vote for me) or is it just for the Christmas period?
Having (like most of my UK shopper colleagues) been crucified with outrageous and crippling customs charges whenever purchasing toy soldier figures from the States I am somewhat bemused that the Custom Bandits and Parcel Force would give up this ever increasing cash cow so easily.

Wow,must say not read this myself but it sounds good.As you say Reb its probably a 'Please vote for me and forget everything we've done wrong' ploy but we can't look a gift horse in the mouth!;)

Rob

Just looked on the Customs website and it does indeed confirm this from 1st December until end of next August.

Here is the FACTS from The HM REVENUE & CUSTOMS themselves:-

2. Limits of the changes
We have identified several blogs/internet forums where these changes have been welcomed but widely misunderstood.

It appears people incorrectly believe that from 1 December 2008 goods with a value less than €150 (£105) imported from outside the EU will be admitted without any import charges being levied, but the Regulation applies only to Customs duty.

Import VAT and Excise duties (where applicable) will still apply at the current rate.

Because of this misconception, on some websites people are being wrongly advised to start their ‘Christmas internet shopping’ for goods imported from outside the EU, after the introduction of the increased duty limit on 1 December 2008. This last minute rush (when import VAT and if appropriate excise duty will still be charged) is obviously something both HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and Royal Mail want to try and avoid.

Having just returned from the states with the £/$ rate as it is i found that there were a lot less bargains and even with the VAT some toys still came in close to the UK price (Star Wars items!!). I picked up three Star Wars items this week in the UK, cheaper than they were in the USA.

Oh and Mr Brown wont be getting my vote!!! he is an Arse! :)

Thanks for the info Tony-I just knew that was too good to be true and I could add a hell of a lot to your Brown quote but if I did Brad would have no alternative but to ban me from the forum for life.

I've got a migraine just from reading this excerpt from HM Revenue & Customs. Excise Tax, Customs Duty, Value Added Tax... good lord how many different names can you have for Tax? When the economy tanks is there a Value Reduced Tax added? How in the $%#!* do you keep your sanity mate?

If you think that is bad you should try the VAT forms or the Income Tax demands. They might as well be written in Chinese. Complete gobbledegook.
