I bought a DD039 and it arrived today...I was warned by the seller prior to delivery to be careful with the top canvas racks. The seller informed me these were very fragile and not to lift it out of the box with these for handles. Anyhow I unpackaged it carefully and all the racks looks to be re-glued on with shiny crazy glue markings. The racks are tilted many different directions and barely attached at that. Is this normal? Does anyone have pictures of their DD039 they could provide me for comparison...I will provide my photos this evening. I just cant imagine K&C used crazy glue to attach these parts of the rack to the sides. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Markey

Hi Markey. The answer is no, it is not normal. The ribs should be equally spaced and straight. There should not be any play, either. The DD39 I had was completely straight and the ribs, while not a weight bearing feature, were not all that weak, either. Mine had been packed and unpacked several times with no damage. -- lancer

I just check mine. No shine. I have seen instances where a piece has been glued, but they also brushed it with a matt finish.

Mine is an original one owner driven only .....:D

I understand there was a lot of breakage of the ribs on these models. When I received mine, the top part of the rear rib was cleanly broken off and the next to last rib, has the tiniest amount of play. But that rib and all the others are straight and evenly spaced and solidly attached. The dealer offered to replace the truck, but from what I heard about breakage, I decided to keep the one I had and not chance another shipping where I could get one in worse shape.

I'm not sure how much breakage there was for this model, but some of the long time dealers may be able to say.

Based on my experience, I think there were some breakage issues. My dealer at the time gave me two, both of which he wanted me to sell for him on ebay. One was in bad shape, with broken brackets. The other not too bad, which I purchased from him. At any rate, it doesn't have the glue you describe. Could be similar to the one I sold. Too bad, you've had some bad luck lately.

Here are the pics of DD039...also should the tailgate be so concaved? Is the tailgate fixed because it also has shiney glue around it...

THat is not right, I had 2 both had "loose" "ribs", but nothing that looked like that, that looks like a bad patch job where the fixer didn't match the right ribs back to the right position. The tail looks a little smashed too!

Best of luck

Tom,

Thats what I was thinking...being new at this it's hard for me to know what is right and what isn't. I appreciate everyones response as it has helped greatly in deciding whether a refund is correct or not. I might add the seller has offered full refund and now included shipping as part of the refund...so for the moment I have some DD040's with nowhere to sit....I'll find that truck again I'm sure! Thanks Again everyone!

Here's my solution to the problem. I had 5 sets. One had all ribs bent up. I got the tarp from Build-A-Rama 3 years ago. Check w/ark if he's still making them

I remember after this truck was retired K & C found. A few that didn't have ribs and sold them that way. Collectors raised a howl because it had been retired but as usual everything subsided :)

A howl over a "few" incomplete trucks. What were the howls about? The market wasn't flooded, was it?

Terry

I got one of these trucks, which looked like it was repaired. But was not in to bad of shape.

I think the complaint was from those who probably were selling theirs on ebay.
Along comes similar trucks and they believe their return will be affected.

Something similar happened when K & C said only a small amount of WS 67 King Tiger would be made, designating them as limited, but not SLs, and then said they would make more. Again, another furor, which led to Steven Chong's suggestion of using the words "planned production," which K & C now uses (see the Mustang on the K & C website).

See we old guys who have been collecting for a few years are good for something :D

How does "planned production" help?

Terry

It helps because it indicates to the buyer or potential seller that K & C may make more so don't rely on their making only the stated number. I believe that with WS 67 people took the statement of "limited" as the gospel, kind of like a representation or warranty that you would make in an agreement. However, that was never K & C's intent. They meant limited as there wouldn't be many but not necessarily a set specific number.

OK Thanks
