I have had my eye on the Del Prado Francesco Gonzaga figure for some time - I thought he would make a complementary addition to Henry Tudor and Sir William Brandon.

Same sort of expectant pose and pretty near on the right era. I have looked at the Del Prado mounted knights - this one seemed vastly superior in pose and sculpt (Horse and rider) to the others. One came up recently on ebay £6.99 so I thought I'd take a chance and buy it.

The horse was leaning noticeably to it's left so I re-positioned it to upright. (The rider leans also, but I just could not budge him from his saddle

I then trimmed off some small pieces of "flash" and cut the standing clumps of grass from the base (to match the style of the JJD bases) and added loose grass. I broke the sword grip & pommel {eek3} whilst doing this so had to replace just the pommel. (looked better to me) I painted in the horses fetlocks and hooves and generally sharpened up the paint work, (repainting some of the colours.)

The rider is pretty much the same size as the JJD's. The horse is taller and sturdier than the JJD's - (although some of the difference in height is due to the Del Prado base being 2 to 3 times thicker than the JJD's.)

I guess he could be used as Sir John Cheyne (who was a man of great height and strength) - but to me he has something of the "Stanley" about him :)

I now have a very nice compatible figure for my collection (for £6.99 and a bit of work I think he more than holds his own with my JJD's!

Very nice conversion and it fits very well with the JJD figures IMO. Emilio of Kronprinz did a number of the better Del Prado figures sculpts. You cannot beat the prices and with a little improvement thy can be very good.

Thank you Katana, I was wondering who may have done the sculpt. (The original base before I removed the grass clumps looked very similar in style to K&C's bases.)

I do like Emilio's work, especially his faces, very impressed with them.. I have a couple of his Seven Years War figures in my Leuthen set up.

Cheers,
Roy

You make it sound an easy conversion Roy, but it would not have been. No question it's come up a treat and blends with the JJD. This is a one of kind and bound to bring enquiries when you display it as where did it come from. Quite unique. Robin.

Thank you Robin, very kind of you :) Really -just a lot of patience required  The thing is, it is a great sculpt and just needed some TLC ^&grin
To blend it in with my JJD's was the prime aim.

Roy;

Amazing job you did on that figure !

You certainly accomplished your goal - Well Done :salute::.

Conversions, that turn out well, like yours, have a 'special' place in one's collection.

Thank you for posting.

As the others before me have already said, your conversion of this figure turned out to be very, very nice . . . . Hopefully he won't become cannon fodder once John releases his WoR artillery gun and crew . . . .

:smile2: Mike

Great conversion Roy ^&cool

There are certainly some gems among the Del Prado range. I use one of their Cavalry figures in my K & C Napoleon display, the title on the base is: Trooper, 5e Regiment, French Cuirassiers, 1806-12. The figure cost me next to nothing and looks great even in its unaltered state.

The Del Prado Enemies of Rome line had several very good sculpts by Enrico. The Dacian King, The Marcomannic King, The Tervingi (Visigoth), and The Saxon, work well with Conte, TCS and K&C Roman and Barbarian figures. I have posted dioramas with all in combat together and they look good. Some Del Prado figures are great and some are awful, no consistency! Choose wisely!

Thanks Matt :salute:: Yes, some gems for sure!

I have seen another Del Prado I could possibly use for my JJD WOR. I'll see if there is one at the London Toy Soldier show next week to get a better look at :)

Some of the Del Prado figures are excellent; but I have read in comments on the forum that Richard Walker does not intend to rerelease the figures! A shame really and it makes you wonder why he bought Del Prado. Perhaps he will sell the masters and molds to someone who will produce them.

The three mounted figures in my Roman River Boat diorama are from Del Prado and they are very effective when combined with other figures IMO
