At the Chicago Toy Soldier Show (OTSN), Old Northwest Trading Company (Michigan Toy Soldier) announced they had become the exclusive U.S. distributor for Del Prado. They will be offering subscriptions for the entire Del Prado line of magazines w/ the figures produced by K&C: "Men At War in the 20th Century", "Napoleon at War", "Cavalry of the Napoleonic Wars", and "The Medieval Collection." They will have all the issues. Though only the title page is currently available, ONTC state they will have pictures of the entire line at www.delpradousa.com. This site also states separate figures (no magazine) would be available this winter.

I would love to carry them in my store. Thanks for the info - I'm going to see if I can buy them in bulk.

The question for me will be at what price? I saw many dealers sellling these in the $25 range, which is too expensive. I can get these cheaply from ebay and since there are so many auction from UK sellers, I never wind up paying more than $14 to $15 a figure, some of which in all honesty I've then sold for about $22. Not a great profit, but decent.

They will be sold at $12.95 for one, $23.95 for two or $43.94 for four per month post paid. I think that is a great deal especially with the high postage shipping from the UK.

Yup, that's a pretty good deal Alex. Quite reasonable. By the way, your daughter was very cute.

Thanks Brad. Emily(2 yrs old) had a great time and I was a little nervous when we were looking at the $495 St. Petersburg figures but she behaved and kept her hands to herself and she said that she like them.

That would make me very nervous too. That Russian stuff is magnificent but just too expensive. I don't know how dealers make a living selling those soldiers but I'm sure there are people out there willing to pay that.

Brad:
The K&C store in Hong Kong carries Russian figures (mostly AeroArt St. Petersburg). Andy once told me a Singaporean businessman walked into his store for the first time, liked the Russian figures, and bought one of every figure he had -- over US$15,000 sale!!! It's a different league of collector.

ONWTC have listed all the figures in the four Del Prado series they will be carrying. They also have clear pictures of the first eight figures in each series so collectors can take a look at the quality of the figures. ONWTC states the remaining images and more information will be added to the site over the next couple of weeks. They have also posted pricing and ordering information is also now posted. See http://www.delpradousa.com :)

I guess this is a question for Ken Olsen or any of the people at ONWTC. Will I be able to purchase individual figures, in groups of 3 or 4, without having to subscribe to a series? I am building a Napoleonic diorama and using Del Prado Cavalry helps to build the numbers I am seeking. While I love the K&C miniatures, Del Prado has such a wide range. Thanks guys, Michael

I'm curious to see the answer to sceic2's question and would like to add a question of my own. By looking at some of the pics there are figures that look as though they have a matt finish while other look as though they have a gloss finish. Can someone enlighten me as to what finish these figures have?

I have the complete Men at War set and they are all matte finish as I believe the others are also.
Gary

I emailed ONWTC and the reply I got was disappointing, at least from my perspective. They will only be selling subscriptions to an entire line of one or more of the four Del Prado sets. Individual figures are not available. Perhaps in the future? :(

That's stupid. Since most of the figures are not up to the quality of K & C, why would I want to buy a whole bloody line for? It's possible that those are the conditions imposed by Del Prado so I'll give Michigan Toy Soldier the benefit of the doubt. If you want to get any more of these, I would recommend using this link, http://search-desc.ebay.com/del-pra...QQftrvZ1QQftsZ2QQsacatZ2631QQsbrsrtZlQQsojsZ0, as you can wind up getting them, delivered, for around $14.

Good to know they have a matte finish but definitely a bummer there being offered only through subscription. I hate to be pessimist for ONWTC but I doubt this deal going to work for them. I don't think collectors like to be tied to a subscription. At least I don't.

In France, every week there is a new booklet with a figure that is distributed, so people buy the booklet they want and there is, you can easily imagine, a lot of unsolds ever week. Del Prado or any other editor who's selling his products on the same manner usually don't destroy them. They can resell them years later, edit them like an encyclopedia (when a figure or any other gadget is not involve) or send them here in Québec. But those series (Del Prado & Hachette) are not available even if we are able to buy actually, every week, booklets on Easter Eggs (!!!) with an easter egg everytime. (close your eyes...). But no Del Prado or Hachette. Strange. It's in french, it's about history (over 50 magazines to choose between every months, french and english), there's a toy soldier, it's a product good for youngs and less youngs and NO, not available. And the distributors are not small players in distribution as I'm sure that over 60% of the magazines are from USA or Europe. All that phrasing to tell that I think that Michtoy had not the choice than to buy all the collection and to make their profits to sell it like in France the only difference is that it will be directly instead via bookstores.

And I still believe that that DEL-MW06 as not the minimum quality to be call a military miniature and unlike other toy soldiers it doesn't have the charm to date from the XIXth century.

My best regards,
Pierre.

I talked to a person from Michigan Toy Soldier today at the Hackensack, NJ show about not being able to buy just a single soldier. He said they're doing that way for now (I did not ask why) but that in 6 months you would be able to buy them singly. My guess is that they're required to sell it that way for the first 6 months.

Re: Del Prado Questions Answered

Hello Everyone,
I guess I need to clear up some things in regards to Del Prado. First please understand that this is a on going process and we are still working out all the kinks. After talking to some of you in NJ and via email I have gone back and done some negotiating in regards to the selling of Del Prado as single figures. First off please keep in mind the Del Prado is a company that sells series of just about anything they think people will collect. They are not a figure company. Figures are just one of many things they have produced so they don't really understand the toy soldier market. Anyway their main concern is offering the figures at a resonable price and hopefully hooking new collectors. I hope the subscription service will work to do that. It may work and it may not. Either way I will have the figures to offer for the foreseeable future are there are large quantities still available of each one. As far as most of you go...you already have many of the figures and won't sign up for the subscription anyway and I have explained that to them. To make a long story short. We will be offering all figures as singles. They are going to cost a little more though. $19.95 for mounted and $ 14.95 for foot. This makes the subscription more attractive but the single figures still reasonably priced. All figures will include the corrsponding books. Here is the catch...single figures will be sold in the same order as the subscriptiion runs. In other words the in first month those figures will be available as singles, next month four more and so on. Once a figure is released it will be available on a ongoing basis. So it will take awhile for some figure to be available. This is the best I could do in regards to selling them as singles. I hope this will help the established collectors while allowing us to try and bring new collectors into the fold which has been my motivation in pursuing this line.

As to some questions about the figures themselves...it's no secert the King & Country manufactured these figures for Del Prado. They also designed and sculpted all of them. The Del Prado figures show the same quality progression that the K&C line itself has shown over the last couple of years. The earlier figures are not quite as nice as the later ones. The Men at Arms where done first, are a few years old and those resemble earlier K&C figures. As K&C improved their sculpting so the Del Prado line improved. The Napoleonic cavalry are as nice as anythingthing in the current K&C line as far as I'm concered. All figures are matt painting and the same as K&C figures in all regards including size. Please note that these figures are owned completly by Del Prado.

I will be glad to answer any more questions any of you have and also welcome comments, suggestions and ideas. Please keep in mind that it may take me a couple of days to respond at times. I have two young girls and they get most of free time. Pleae note that the company has exspressed an interest in a future series and have asked about what could be done. Any thoughts or ideas?

Dear Rick:
Is there any possibility ONWTC will be distributing Del Prado's Great Battles of the Napoleonic Wars w/ the 20 mm painted figures?
Thanks for the time and kind attention.

We are doing a wargame convention in Gettysburg, PA in a couple of weeks and need to decide sometime after that. Our understanding is that they are in the 25-28mm range which is what the Hudson & Allen buildings are scaled to. We will keep you posted.
