Depressing Movies or Characters (1 Viewer)

[The Military Workshop]

I just watched a movie called The Horsemen (1971) starring Omar Sharif and Jack Palance for the first time.

Set in Afghanistan and involves horse racing carrying dead animals. I missed the first 10 minutes but would have to say Omar Sharif played one of the most miserable characters I have seen in a movie. No sense of humour, treated people badly, miserable so and so. Since his was the main role it was a bit of a downer as a movie. Even his two main companions were not particularly nice (although one was nice to look at - Leigh Taylor-Young).

Can anyone thing of other starring roles or movies that are on the depressing side?

Tyrone Power's character in The Black Swan is a jerk. It's a pirate movie. Sarah Mile's character in Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines is cute but annoying in a film where everyone is supposed to be funny.

There's a cgi cartoon "Hoodwinked" I had to watch with my daughter on a cruise ship. That was depressing and creepy. She agreed.

Not long ago I saw 'A single man' with Colin Firth who played a gay British university lecturer in California in the 60's, that was pretty depressing, well acted but you wouldn't want the dvd!

Any film where no matter what the heroes do, no matter how smart or brave or good they are, they get killed, is depressing. Resident Evil I comes to mind as does Stalingrad.

A girl friend of mine came out of Galipoli in tears and was inconsolable for 20 minutes or more.

It was good.Probably the way it would be.No Mad Max riding to the rescue.

Speaking of Black Swan, Natalie Portman's portrayal was mesmerizing. A very sad character though.

I thought National Lampoons Vacation was so depressing, all the trial and tribulations of a family vacation.

Unfortuantely most of the ones I find really depressing are things like "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington". The movie is basically good, but the thought that Congress and politics in general have only gotten worse and more self-serving - now that is truly depressing!

"Nobody's Fool" with Paul Newman. One of the more overlooked of his films. Bruce Willis also has a role. A down on his luck guy in a small town. Lots of humor set against small town ups and downs. The book by Richard Russo is excellent as well - can't recommend it highly enough.

Gorden Geko's Daughter in Wall Street 2 what was Oliver Stone thinking having such a depressing character in what was a good movie.

A video game series called Brothers in Arms is very depressing, but it's realistic and gritty and is my all-time favorite game. Even if it was 10 years ago!
