Destroyed diorama upsets high-schoolers (1 Viewer)

One of our members had a similar experience with a model of Rorke's Drift that he donated to the Natal Museum in Pietermaritzburg. It was not put on display and when he went in and asked to see it it had been badly packed away and was badly damaged.

My aunt and uncle donated their 1952 Hinckley sail boat to Washington College in Chestertown MD. They were assured that the boat would be well cared for and used for education and entertaining donors.

It is rotting in the chester river. Unkept and just a mess. All the work we all did restoring it with local boatwrights, dental tools and sweat.

I know its a different subject but it is equally frustrating if not more so. Organizations say they want these things and sqandor them.

The college still asks my family for donations. Hmmmph.

It doesn't surprise me what museums do with donations. My grandfather recorded his war memories onto six cassette tapes and I rang the Australian War Museum in Canberra and asked them if they would like copies of them for their voice library. They said NO, we only want the originals, but they said they would copy them onto discs for me.

That was over three years ago, and I still haven't got those discs. I was lucky that I did make copies of them before sending the originals to them. They also wanted to know if I would send them his medals etc. I'm silly, but I'm not that silly. ;)

Small world it seems, there is usually more than a simple statement to a story like this.;) As an alumni and donor to that college, I would suggest your relatives could have contacted several people at the college for a redress or better understanding of the problem. It is a small school with very accessible personnel; you can call the president if needs be.
