Well, let's review here; buy several humongus Howard Miller curios, build addition or finish off basement, make or buy cabinets to store hundreds if not thousands of boxes, try to explain collecting toy soldiers to friends and family who think you're getting a little wierd, hire a good divorce lawyer because wife can't take any more, win lottery to help pay for all this........ am I missing something:eek:

fred

Have you considered bank robbery as a second career. It is an option for collectors ya know. :D Michael

PS The cheapest I have ever seen a Howard Miller case, the big one, is $1,660 with free shipping from an Internet dealer. Just think of all the K&C you can get with $1,660 (about 400 Napoleonic's)

Sceic,

I didn't know that Napoleonics only costed $ 4.15 a piece...:D :p Considering bank robberies, I'm going down town right now ...

From what I've seen recently, $1660 will get me a German 88 with enought left over for a cup of coffee (small) and a donut.:D I think I'm too old for bank robbery, how about embezzlement?

I bought the big Howard Miller case for about half that price 18 months ago at an auction held by a large furniture warehouse. They even carried it up the spiral staircase to the second floor and set it up for me. Otherwise, it would probably still be in its packing box in the garage.

Great thread guys but am I right in thinking that these are US cases? Don't recognise the names. Hearing about the Naploenics makes me realise how fantastic they must look all set up :p - and why I musn't weaken.

I felt a bit left out while reading this thread as almost no Aussie homes have a basement as seems the usual in the US, or a loft as most in the UK seem to have. Our house is on a concrete slab and being less than 15 years old it's all open plan design so anyone in the ceiling area will soon find themselves in the house if they take a short cut across the ceiling. And the open plan means I didn't even get the Aussie equivalent of the US standard (or so it seems on tv) den.

But it's not all bad, for some reason the house has a formal dining room which is separate from the lounge (unusual in most open plans downunder). The Aussie lifestyle and climate, especially in Queensland, means formal dining rooms rarely get used, so guess what, it's become my office/display room. What hasn't fitted in there is on display or stored somewhere throughout the house. Btw, I recommend fitting more shelves in built-in wardrobes in spare bedrooms as they are very handy for display areas because they are out of the other halfs way and rarely need dusting.

Do you have a garage? You can always convert this as an additional bedroom or your stock room.

Attic is another solution. I installed a pull-down ceiling ladder and put boards on the joists.

Or get an oversized shed in your backyard

As a last resort you can always move to a new house. I heard houses in Pakuranga are cheap...oops, sorry...just realized that's in NZ

Hi NP, yes garages are handy but with two cars taking up most of the space there's just enough room for the book shelves we have along the rear wall. These contain the usual handyman equipment together with part of my military book collection which are in boxes atm. And of course over 35 years of collecting I've gone thru several collecting themes and the garage is also full of my 'no longer required but haven't yet had the heart to sell stuff'. Btw if anyone has spare space for about twenty 1/48 scale diecast aircraft including several WWII bombers I'd be happy to sell them cheap :)

An attic or loft as they're called in the UK is out for me because of the open plan design we have. Open plans are nice and roomy but you don't have enough supporting walls to carry excess weight in the ceiling area. Another problem is that most Australian homes have concrete tile roofs so there's enough weight up top already without the added weight of flooring, cabinets, people and polystone :) In any case most roof lines are low in Australia because few areas get snow here, so that limits the space available in the roof area.

We presently have a 8' x 8' garden shed but those pressed metal prefab jobs aren't very weather proof and I don't think my wife would be very happy if I built a larger/better shed to disappear into as she reckons I spend to much time playing with my models inside as it is.
