See a K&C vehicle released and think yes thats nice, but not yet.And so you put off buying it for months, perhaps years. Finally you buy it and you think WOW! How did i not buy this before?!!.This has just happened to me with the FOB Stug, this AFV is so good i can't believe i left it so long.I don't know if this vehicle is in line for being retired, but anyone thinking of getting it don't wait,it really is good.

Its only my second 'Grey' vehicle and i'm very impressed. The paint work, weathering, stowage and crew are all very well done indeed.Yesterday we were talking about extra Tank crew 1/2 figures,if i could get differing crew for this Stug i would most certainly get another for a convoy scene.

Can anyone tell me what the 'S' stands for painted next to the gun?.

I know i say this a lot :)rolleyes::eek:;))but this is right up among my faves.

I don't know if any of the markings on the grey stug are actual markings. The red skull is like but not actually the Totenkopf Division symbol unless it is a version I have not seen. Nor is it the symbol for any other SS or Wehrmacht panzer division and certainly not one in 1940 France. It could be the symbol of a separate sturmartillerie Abteilungen (Battalion) which is how the Stugs were organized in 1940. The symbol on the nose of the Stug looks like the generic organizational symbol for a self-propelled artillery vehicle which helped identify the AFV to the traffic wardens. The "S" could be an early war sturmfuhrer rank designation which the armour used. The Sturmfuhrer rank was an SS rank which was changed to Untersturmführer, equivalent 2nd lieutenant in the Wehrmacht, but could also mean Obersturmführer (1st lieutenant) and Hauptsturmführer (Captain).

I am not sure of any of this.

Probably not. The K&C vehicle is based on a real StuGIII in the 192 StuG battalion (11/40-4/42) which got sucked into the GD in 1942. The real vehicle has a number '25' above the death head & S, and the 'S' is italicized, and the letter is unique as no other StuG from this outfit has a letter. The rest just have numbers. So the S could possibly mean Stab or Staffel, or is just a personal ID. I really doubt the crew would have wanted to advertize Stab or Staffel on their front plate to Russian gunners

Other StuGs from other units had letters such as this, but always in lieu of a number.

The K&C model is depicting the invasion of France. The 192 StuG Battalion did not exist during the invasion of France. There were then only 30 Stug III Ausf A assault guns and these were in 5 Sturmartillerie Batteries which was how they were organized at the time. Batteries 640, 659, 660 and 665 fought in the French Campaign as did the 5th Battery of StuGs which were issued to SS Sturmartillerie Battery of Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler division. The model should be from one of those. Each battery had 6 StuGs in three platoons. The 666th and 667th Batteries were added but after France surrendered. To be correct, the head symbol would have to be from Battery 640, 659, 660 665, or the Adolf Hitler Division. I don't know if early StuG Batteries had a symbol (probably not) and the Divisional symbol for the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler division was a skeleton key.

I still think the symbol marking looks dodgy but I can accept the "S" and the SPG symbols as early war.

I think they made it because it looks cool & France '40 collectors wouldn't be too critical

Is the head symbol you saw on the book a square with a red head exactly as on the model? If yes, it was probably the insignia of 192 StuG battalion or possibly the Infantry Division it was with. I have always thought that Andy used artistic license and had just created the red head? :)

Superb shots Frank, thanks for posting. So glad i got this model now,i want another one!
